True 19th Century Detective Stories

Written in the Victorian age this book moves slower than I am used to reading. It moves steadily along and kept my interest. I recommend this book to anyone interested in a real 19th century detective and the cases his company worked on.

Simple and delicious recipes for us "at-home cooks." The salmon and pasta dish on page 70 is already part of our regular dinner rotation, and it's the first dish we tried. Rens is also quite entertaining- for those who don't know her, check out some of her short videos on Instagram (@renskroes)

My kind of food, my kind of life

Rens is amazingly cheerful on each recipe, healthy, practical and yummie. I enjoi the taste of each creation since reading. I was looking for this, such as I like to eat. Great book!!

Pretty good recipes incorporating lots of superfood ingredients, but with no nutritional info included.

This is a cookbook that screams "energy" from the squiggly and mixed typefaces to the ingredients to the amount of work required to make some of the recipes. The book is liberally sprinkled with photos of the author, Rens Kroes, smiling and otherwise gazing out to engage the reader to start making her recipes. Her enthusiasm, which comes through in her descriptions of the recipes, is infectious.

But this is not a cookbook for everyone. There are lots and lots of different superfood-type ingredients and spices that the majority of home cooks do not use. Some are used in such small quantities that buying them just to make one or recipes seems extravagant unless you are planning to incorporate superfoods and/or exotic spices into your daily routine. Some of the spices are impossible to find and others are quite expensive, so it would have been nice if the author had given more suggestions for substitutes. A couple of those ingredients are:
Laos powder - I found out that this is what we in the US call galangal, but my local Whole Foods had neither. Ginger can be substituted, but it is not the same.
Lucuma powder - It is very expensive.
Maca powder - more easily available. Kind of expensive.
Also, chlorella powder, coconut blossom sugar, Madame Jeanette chiles, Inca berries, guarana powder and samphire.
If you routinely use those items, you are in luck, but I have found that some of them are very hard to find unless mail-ordered.

So far I've only made a few of the recipes, and they came out well enough to make me want to go further. I've included photos of them:

-- Oven Roasted Peppers - these are essentially mini-peppers stuffed with hummus, and they are delicious. I think her mini-peppers are smaller than the ones I get at Trader Joe's because, in the book's photo, they are overstuffed with hummus. That would be too overwhelming for the size of mini-peppers I can get. Still, this was simple and ingenious and a great, healthy snack.
-- Hazelnut Milk - easy to make, tasty and without all of the fillers and additives that commercial nut milks have. Thin and reminiscent in many ways to Mexican horchata, but with vanilla in place of cinnamon. Hazelnuts are expensive, and there are a lot of ground hazelnuts made in the process (pictured in the sieve). It made me wonder if there wasn't some way Kroes might suggest to use those.
-- Kick-Start - this is billed as "probably the most delicious and healthiest breakfast ever!" It is not more delicious than French Toast, ok? But seriously, for a simple, delicious, healthy breakfast, this works. It is filling and stays with you for hours upon hours. I would describe it as pulverized muesli. Also, I admit to drizzling mine with maple syrup. It is best eaten immediately after it is blended - it gets a bit hard in the fridge.
I was going to make the "Good Noodles," which feature shrimp and soba noodles, but when I read that it took a total of four pots and pans to make what initially seemed like a fairly simple dish, I scrapped it.

Bottom Line:
I like what I made, but so many of the ingredients are very expensive, too difficult to find or both. I love the energy conveyed in the book and the recipes have been pretty good. There are great recipes for snacks, juice blends and smoothies. And the cupcake recipe looks as though it might be worth the cost of the book.

Unfortunately, I can't give a cookbook about healthy food five stars when there is no nutritional information included. If I am going to go to all of the trouble that many of these recipes require, I'd really like to know precisely what nutritional benefits I'd gain by doing so.

Not Exactly "Kidnapped"...

I really enjoy Robert Louis Stevenson. Like Arthur Conan Doyle, he's got a surprisingly timeless voice. "Kidnapped" was my first introduction to R.L.S., and from the moment David Balfour met the narcissistic highlander Alan Breck Stewart, I was hooked. The plot was exciting, adventurous. The characters were surprising and fresh. When I heard there was a sequel, "Catriona", I settled in for what I imagined would be more swashbuckling, more pirates, more Scottish political intrigue.

There's a fair serving of the latter, I suppose, but the vast majority of this book is a plodding romance between David Balfour and Catriona, daughter of rogue MacGregor James More. It's love at first sight for David, and the next 200 odd pages are rife with manufactured subplots and artificial bickering to keep them apart until the final chapter. (Yes, she's a Highland lass with a renegade father, but David, being an orphaned laird with a considerable inheritance, doesn't exactly have a lot standing in his way.) I spent much of the time waiting for the return of Alan. There'll be the excitement, the adventure, I thought. But nope. He just showed up as a perfunctory cameo, and played the role of matchmaker. Yeesh.

If you're looking for a tidy historical romance, "Catriona" might just hit your fancy. If you're looking for something more in the line of "Kidnapped," it's predecessor, you'll probably be disappointed. Apart from some crossover characters, there isn't a lot to tie these two together.

Different Pace, Perfect Finish

Picture an upright, law-abiding young man as just about alone in the world, thrust into an unexpected fortune and a friend's rebel scrapes. Picture a bonny highland lass, the essence of innocence and loyalty. Picture Jacobite struggles, a negligent father, and a situation in which the only honorable course of action is that which appears the least honorable. Stevenson has done an exquisite job of weaving Davy's heartstrings into a knot--and, of course, the reader's as well. Can the tangle be unraveled without damage? By whom?

I rarely enjoy a sequel as much as the story before it, but keeping Kidnapped and Catriona divided into two books is the same as slicing a standalone in half and buying both pieces separately. Kidnapped reads much more quickly, with a lot more fast-paced action. Catriona introduces more complex relationships. You can't have one without the other--they're opposite ends of the same arc.

So if you're a fan of R. L. Stevenson, please do yourself a favor and find a copy. If you haven't read Kidnapped yet, then do yourself a different favor and find them both. Best read out loud in a Scots brogue.

Loaded with Great Dialect ... But Bumpy Relationships

I've read a few RLS novels and I find them somewhat addicting -- but then again, I am a big student of language and I love Scots dialect. In terms of plot, this one is moderately interesting. The main character, David Balfour, is very well done. We get to see him mature from a rash "gomeral" (fool) of a youngster into a man of principle and conviction. To me, the most interesting relationships he developed were with the Lord Advocate of Prestongrange and his daughter Barbara. The Lord Advocate becomes a frenemy, to use modern-speak, to David--but overall his advocacy of David outweighs his initial subterfuge. The daughter, Barbara (gorgeous and witty) schemes to bring David and Catriona together.

The politics of the age are familiar to me .... this is seven or so years after "The Rising" (1745) and the bloody battle of Culloden, when Scotland and its proud highlanders were slammed into submission by the British armed forces and monarchy. These events would color Scots history for hundreds of years. There are a handful of heroic figures being prosecuted by the Brits, and David wants to bear testimony in favor of saving them. Into this intrigue comes the heavily impeded romance with Catriona. Politics, distance, Catriona's rapscallion of a father, and--most of all--constant misunderstandings between these two lovers are thrown in the way of David's passion for Catriona. Her character I have to admit was fairly well-developed, but in short, I did not like her ... she was subject to petty jealousies and fits of petulance and I wanted David to comprehend her shallowness, perhaps even throw her over and go back to Barbara Grant. To summarize, while surely not Stevenson's best book, it was a good tale, fascinating in language and sense-of-time-and-place, with some good characters.

The book “Kratom” is written in an attempt to clarify the mysteries involved, clear out the misconceptions and present the true and established facts. Facts that say that it is a beneficial plant as long as it’s use is kept on an occasional and controlled manner and as along as some precautions like not driving and not using any heavy equipment while under its influence and not using it if you are a pregnant woman are kept.

Natural remedy

When downloading this book, I couldn’t believe I the details the writer gives about this wonderful tea. I thought It would just contain info on different kinds of the tree and perhaps different ways of preparation of the tea. I had no idea it was a forbidden ingredient in so many countries and that there are strict laws against any use of it. It is really sad, since, natural is almost always right and would never create something that could hurt us. Kraton is a natural stimulant and a pain killer. I wish pharmaceutical companies would be more interested in it and its incredible potentials.

A very good staring point

I had never ever heard of Kratom. I have a highly stressful job and was looking for relief with the anxiety my job is causing me and someone recommended Kratom so I had to research this powerful medicinal plant. Well, anything you want to know about it is in this book. From the history, origin, and description to the effects, benefits, preparation, processing, dosage, and most importantly special precautions. It is a fascinating plant and I will probably continue to research it before I buy some, but this book is a very good starting point.

This is a very nice primer on those issues of two-dimensional design usually addressed in freshman foundation courses. A slim volume, amply illustrated, it succinctly explains the major aspects of formAfter defining terms, the author, a professor of design at Oregon State University, [discusses] why one might want to analyze formhe goes on to describegestalt, semiotic and information theories and the methodology of problem-solving formal questions. Not a Great Textbook

I think there is an issue when the most pertinent information is often found in the captions, not in the body of the text. Decent examples, just very light on actual text. The students did not care for it much, either. I hope to use a different book for the Design Fundamentals next semester.

About the Author

Mike Williams, Ph.D., is a shamanic practitioner and teacher trained in soul retrieval, spirit extraction, divination, and assisting the dead and dying. An elected Druid and tutor/mentor for the Order of Bards, Ovates, and Druids, Williams studied with indigenous shamanic teachers in Siberia and Lapland and attended teaching sessions with Native American elders. He lives in Wales.

Demystifing the Shamanic World

I have never written a review before but have been prompted to do so after reading Follow the Shaman's Call. I love this book.

Something magical happens just in the reading of it. Mike accompanies you on a variety of journeys, leading you with his gentle wisdom. It is very clear that this man not only knows his stuff but has experienced the shamanic path over time and distance. At the beginning of each chapter there is a little vignette/story which transports you to another world and another time allowing you a firsthand glimpse of the shamanic world - then in the chapter he takes you under his wing as he guides you with practical, down to earth structures for working safely and powerfully in a shamanic way.

This book is a smooth read - it is well written, extensively researched and delightfully executed. I found it all encompassing and grounded in ancient wisdom. I have great respect for Mike, his wisdom, inclusivity, humility and gentle power. Whether you are just dipping your toe into the shamanic world for the first time or are a seasoned traveller this book is an informative, empowering and enjoyable companion.

I can't wait for the next book - which I think is coming out soon !

An eye-opener to a new spiritual path

I had known very little about shamanism prior to reading this book and I chose it for review expressly for the purpose of learning more. I'm glad I did because I think this could be a book that could help me fill a spiritual void I've had for years.

For as long as I can remember I've had an outsider's view of organized religion. My dad's an atheist and my mom's agnostic. When I was 11-ish I was given a choice to go to CCD (both were raised Roman Catholic in Old Vatican practices). Even at that impressionable age, when all of my friends were going to CCD, I said no because even then I knew it would be a waste of my time. I didn't care for "that type" of religion. Of course I was made fun of. I even had a few kids tell me to my face I was going to hell. It didn't bother me even then.

So ever since I've been trying to seek out some kind of spiritual path and I would find aspects of more pagan religions appealing but I never actively considered joining any of them. I wanted something organic, more natural and pre-historic than anything rumbling around currently. For a while it was mixing around those Pagan religions but nothing really called to me. I have my beliefs but they never really fit into anything specific so I've just been going on with my life as is.

Then I picked up this book to read and all of a sudden it clicked. This is it. Williams does an excellent job of describing just what Shamanism is, how to go about practicing it and just what kind of life you'll lead as a shaman. He doesn't pander, he doesn't pull punches. He just tells it like it is and I really liked that. The way he described journeying to the Otherworlds had me wanting to go buy a drumming CD and try it out for myself, despite how afraid it actually makes me.

It's a religion as natural as you can possibly get without the confines of organization or the baggage that comes along with it. There are no stringent requirements, no elevation or shunning of other people. There's just you and nature and that's pretty much it and that's what I like about it.

I plan on using this book as sort of my beginner's guide to shamanism. It's a good tool if you're just starting out and not sure where to step first. It gives you a little bit of information in a lot of areas of shamanism without being overwhelming or confusing. I found it immensely helpful and I plan on making it wholly dog-eared by the time I'm done with it.

If you're interested in delving into a new (well, really old) and natural religion, Follow the Shaman's Call is definitely a good place to start.

Great Addition To Any Shamanic Library!

I loved this book as it combined the historical background of Ancient Shamanic Teachings with the first hand experience of the Author and his contemporaries. There are well explained methods and exercises which are interwoven with lovely anecdotes that bring them alive, making them usable in today's modern society.

The style is informal and knowledgeable without ever patronising the reader and I feel it would be a great introduction for the beginner to gain an overview of Shamanism as well as being a welcome addition to any Shamanic library for the more experienced practitioner.
