a misguided effort - useful for interviews and raw data only

This book is a good example of how mechanical attention to scholarship can lead to missing the big picture entirely.
Jones studies the rise of the Pakistan People's Party in fantastic micro-detail. He has done all sorts of interviews, looked at polling data and looked at every sort of written evidence there could possibly be. But he never rises above it takes a look at these people or events from the outside. He doesn't look at their backgrounds or their relationships in a proper way to understand. He takes the political statements made by the party as if they are literal truth. And those are the reasons it goes wrong.
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was a man who grew rich in the service of dictators. The PPP was always less a political party than it was his personal vehicle and his property. Its rise to power should be seen as creating a feudalistic oligarchy based on personal relationships than a true popular political party.
The simple proof of that is that the part has remained the exclusive property of the Bhutto family since its inception. No leader or member outside the family exists. Its passed through three generations of the family now without even a significant challenge inside the party.
The book is wrong in seeing the PPP as being a break with elite politics or a true expression of mass politics. It was a continuation of the old politics rather than anything new. The author's methods fail because no amount of statistical data gathered from polling stations can give one insight into the relationship based politics of Pakistan.
The book is useful for the interviews and raw data it makes available, but not for its analysis.
