DNF. I got to the 34% Mark and couldn't go further. There's nothing original here. Spoiled, rich, college girl who insists she isn't spoiled and does absolutely nothing to show that she isn't spoiled is our heroine. She throws herself at our hero in a club and then blames him for not taking her up on the invitation. Her narrative digs for sympathy. Nope, can't find any. Let me dig a little deeper. Nope, I'm fresh out of give-a-d@mn for our heroine. Our hero is a bit less well drawn. He had a rough life, made some extremely poor choices, and still pays for them. He's not exactly sympathetic either and I can't figure out why he would want to guard the bratty, entitled princess if not for the paycheck. He's a bit of a man-whore, but he's not doing the pursuing, merely accepting the invitations received and not pretending that those encounters are anything but sordid.

Aside from the stock characters, the content is riddled with errors. Plurals and apostrophes are not the same. Some words are misspelled (midriff, not mid-drift; lip-synch, not lip-sing). IOW, the book needs editing.

The final slam is the alternating narrative point of view. It's an affectation that I dislike more and more, because it's often not done well. In this book there isn't even the courtesy of the narrator's name to indicate whose POV you're reading. It doesn't take long to figure that out, but it is annoying.

My recommendation is to find another book that doesn't rely on worn out tropes and isn't littered with errors.

Finding Somebody to Love

Forgotten Bodyguard involves a senator's daughter, Chloe, who's in the midst of her dad running for President of the United States of America and Ian, a tattooed, smoking hot guy, who has lived his life in foster care with his brother Jake. Ian has a long wrap sheet of criminal activity from his youth and can't seem to shake the persona. Jake gives him a job in his security detail and that is where Ian first meets Senator Moore. He saves him from being shot at an open concert. This puts Ian high on Senator Moore's list of people to guard Chloe. The only problem is Chloe is a twenty-one year old UCLA student that doesn't want a baby sitter but she sure wants Ian!

Throughout the story we learn a lot about what makes up the two characters. Chloe lost her mother when she was young and because of her dad's political career, he had very limited time for her. He was one of those dads that gave gifts to show love instead of actions. Ian, although he looks tough on the outside, is very much a man looking for a woman to love him. He had a girlfriend once, but she died in his arms from an overdose, which apparently, he helped her get hooked on drugs. The two go through some rough times of testing each other, but in the end fall in love. This story has the wonderful style of Ali Parker of love with a little drama on the side. Another wonderful read and would recommend!

Great beginning...

To a new series of books. (Not a cliffhanger. ) Very well written and fast paced. The story had just enough action to add some excitement to the romance. The main characters were well developed, and fit their rolls in the story. Definitely recommend this book!

Wayne Douglas Barlowe is the John James Audubon of otherworld creatures. He attended the Art Students League and Cooper Union, and apprenticed in the exhibition department at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. His illustrations have been seen on myriad paperback books, and appear in Tomorrow and Beyond. He is also the author of the Hugo-award-nominated Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials, now with over 267,000 copies in print.

Cool book

This is a cool book, even if it's getting old. It would be good for a roleplaying game supplement, or ideas for some form of creative media. I also bought it because it's cool.

This book is way cool!

This was one of my favorite books when I was a kid just starting out to read Science Fiction. It's sort of like one of those "real" nature books with drawings, habitats, and biological information, but it's all about aliens from major Science Fiction authors. You figure the authors of this book have got to have a lot of information to put something like this together. For those of a puerile nature (or those who read a lot of Niven's rishartha), they even have some alien species' mating habits. In the middle there is a scale diagram of all of the aliens' sizes which was my first exposure to the wonderful world of the metric system. Buy it, read it, in will enrich your Science Fiction library

Very good, but seems to contain some errors

I do want to say starting off that (1) I got this because, being a Sci-Fi fan into artsy books, this was a hole in my collection; (2) I have been a fan of Barlowe's art since I found a used-but-impeccable copy of EXPEDITION a few years back; and (3) overall, this book did not dissapoint.
The book seems (at least on the surface) to be a well-researched compendium of aliens renedered in paint fit to augment the fertile imaginations of readers everywhere. The aliens are mainly from books and short stories that I'm not familiar with (not surprising since this was published originally when I was aproximately 5 years old), but there is enough info about them included to make it not just pictures of things I don't know what they are.
I personally felt that the best part was the sketchbook drawings in the back. I would adore to see the Thype project finally completed. And I think that some of the sketches of the aliens are superior to the finished paintings, an opinion that I realize many readers may not share.
But my big beef with the book is based on the Guild Steersman. If you read the Dune books with any care you can figure out that steersmen are mutated humans. They are not at all in this book like they are portrayed in the novels and some of the facts here are quite wrong. That the steersmen are not aliens of an unknown planet but humans who are mutated by spice overexposure is used as a plot point in one of the Dune prequels and the fact is presumably taken either from Herbert's notes or the inferences from the original novels.
Now this in itself would not usually lead me to give a book a mediocre review. It does worry me, however, that one of the other races in this book was in a story I was reading at the time (I think it was one of the Poul Anderson stories, neither book is close at hand as I write this) seemed to have a few minor oddnesses with it as well. It makes me wonder if some of the other aliens don't have the same kind of factual problems between what is in this volume and what they're like in the original story in a way that's not simply a difference of imagination.
Bottom line: get it for the art and the glosses of the alien races, but don't be that surprised if the description or portrait of your favorite alien doesn't quite match what you've seen in your head all these years.

About the Author
Jennifer Westwood was born in 1940 and studied English language at Oxford, followed by mediaeval Icelandic at Cambridge. A member of the Folklore Society, she has served as Editor of FLS Books and also the journal Folklore. Her books include Albion: A Guide to Legendary Britain (1985), Gothick Cornwall (1992), Lost Atlantis (1997) and On Pilgrimage (2003). She belongs to the Henry Doubleday Research Association, the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and the Society of Authors. She lives in rural Norfolk. Dr Jacqueline Simpson was born in 1930, and studied English Literature and Medieval Icelandic at Bedford College, London University. She has been an active member of the Folklore Society since the 1960s, having served at various times as Editor, Secretary, and President. Her books include Icelandic Folktales and Legends (1971, 2004), The Folklore of the Welsh Border (1976, 2004), British Dragons (1980, 2000), and, jointly with Steve Roud, A Dictionary of English Folklore (2000). She lives in West Sussex.

MAGNIFICENT book!

MAGNIFICENT book! My wife and I picked this up in a second-hand shop on our three week exploration of Wales and England. In England it became our primary guide book for all things unusual and preternatural. I just ordered The Lore of Scotland and eagerly anticipate reading it. These women (Jennifer Westwood and Jacqueline Simpson) are OUTSTANDING scholars on the subject and I hope some intelligent publisher wanting to make "wheel-barrels loads full of money" will commission them to do similar books on WALES and IRELAND!!

Absolutely gorgeous!

I bought it for me, because I saw that it was talking about the Guisborough raven. I've never had a more fascinated book. What a research! It tells you of all the interesting spots in Great Britain, related to haunted houses, legends, myths, ghosts, hidden treasure etc., with photos and detailed descriptions. And, what I found even cooler, it also gives you maps with all these sport on them. The information is very well organized and easy to find, the paper is nice, and the cover is pleasantly inspiring ;-)
Since I've bought it, this book has become my favorite present idea to the very best and dear people.
Strongly recommend to anyone!

Great book what can really help you

I really liked this book it is very complete with chapters about sizing your machines, discussing virtualization, JVM tuning ( hotspot and JRocket), SOA Suite tuning, the soa infra database, adapters plus design guidelines for your composites. This book has all the answers/checks to identify your problem or build a great SOA Suite solution.
this book of Matt and Nicholas is an impressive achievement and I think they did a lot of research to find the right tuning parameters.

Personally I would change the chapters and help the administrator or developer in the process from nothing to performant SOA Suite server or from a performance problem to a solution. ( the most likely problem first and then to the less likely ).
For me was the JVM tuning was too much, especially JRocket this is replaced a time ago by Java 7 SE suite ( I think you are licensed to use this ), For JVM tuning I just look to the GC when this is once in the 5 minutes I am satisfied and move on to the server, database and BPEL invoker plus dispatchers threads.

I found it a bit strange that they keep on changing the domain scripts for JVM tuning and after a many pages, there is a same paragraph that say you should do it in the WebLogic console and start the managed servers with a NodeManager. Probably this is the most easy way for a cookbook and not having to explain NodeManagers etc. But this is bad practice because every server will have the same memory parameters even the WebLogic Admin server, with clusters you have to change this on every machine plus patching can undo your changes. The JMS bridge part was a bit strange for me, I would only use a bridge with a old WebLogic container or with for example with JBoss and maybe use a Foreign JMS server instead but for other situations I always use SAF, it is the best, very reliable ( the best ) but indeed harder to configure.
What I missed was a chapter about a server Lan and WebLogic channels, the position of the AdminServer on which machine or the combination with OSB and overloading the BPEL engine cause of a async heavy load, I see this at many customer that after some hours of heavy load everything fails ( invoker continues) and which leads to many ( recoverable) entries in the error hospital or many nights of BPEL autorecovery. Too many invoker threads floods the SOA Suite BPEL engine and the only way what works is doing more in memory (BPEL ), less in database and for example add a parameter on the JMS adapter which reads a message every x seconds.

but I know I will use and recommend this book to my customers and off course will try out these tuning parameters.

Interesting read with a lot of good suggestions

I liked this book. I have learned some new things I can use at customers. This book also does not repeat the manuals and other books much which also makes it interesting. It is the first book I have seen with focus completely on performance and tuning of Oracle SOA Suite 11g. Not only does the book contain the usual performance tips and several new ones but it also provides some suggestions for tuning in a virtualized environment (including a suggestion on how to measure cloud performance) and hardware.

I am no fan of the recipe format and would have grouped some things differently to describe a more bottom up or top down approach to tuning a SOA Suite installation. Especially JVM tuning gets a lot of attention. It is clear the authors know what they write about. Also the writing style makes this book an easy and enjoyable read. I did not get bored.

I missed a bit tuning of the OSB. Maybe some BPEL programming practices or patterns which help improving performance. What I also missed was tuning from a high level down to a single BPEL process; how to bridge the gap from JVM measures to BPEL process instances. There is not much focus on dehydration store maintenance which can also be an important factor in improving performance. Clustering issues are barely touched.

On the whole this was an interesting read with a lot of useful suggestions.

Good book with interesting recipes

This book covers almost all aspects of the performance tuning starting from the weblogic server to different SOA components. The highlight being detailed steps on different options available to analyze and troubleshoot the issues.
The modularization of the book is really good. The book starts with the soa infrastructure, listing the different options of monitoring the JVM's, SOA suite and different components like bpel, rules, mediator which are actually really good. BPEL and BPMN tuning tips are already available as part of the performance guides/blogs ,but the authors have captured that as well in this book, which is good in one way so as it helps to bring all the performance tuning options together. Monitoring SOA suite, JVM Garbage collections, Platform tuning are very well covered in the book. It was good to learn we could leverage multiple available options mentioned in the book to monitor/troubleshoot different JVM/server issues.

The book also covers the tuning aspects from process perspective as well as at environment level with equal importance. I recommend this book as a must read for SOA server Administrators as well as SOA Consultants, this book will help you to get most out of the SOA infrastructure. The book will make an interesting read for those people who love to take it the next level.
