I quit drinking 5 months ago and resolved to learn as much as possible about addiction and the recovery industry. This book is, by far, the best account I've read of the brain's neurochemical reactions to alcohol, and how they drive behavior. It's totally devoid of the moral platitudes and "spiritual" assertions found in other literature; it's short, concise and easy to understand; and, most important, it's really helpful to the recovering addict (or anyway it was to me.) Without giving too much away, the book gives an evidence-based description of the "mechanism" of alcohol addiction involving the different regions of the brain and the neurotransmitters with which they communicate. Norepinephrine, the hormone/neurotransmitter involved in stress-responses, figures largely.
Porter's clear, nonjudgmental explanation gave me helpful tools to apply to my own recovery. I immediately understood the importance of stress-management and placed it at the center of my life. I came to think of alcohol addiction as a health problem, where any solution for stress is equally a solution for withdrawals and craving-- more exercise, better diet, taking care of bills and relationships, effective relaxation, etc. I could be proactive and make good health choices that took the sting off the cravings before they hit, all the while creating a higher standard of health that became a reason in itself for continued sobriety. Five months in, I still apply these principles.
Surprisingly, very little else I read concerned itself with neurobiology. I can't speak for others, but to me the reduction of addiction to physiological processes in the brain did a lot to dispel the horror of recovery. It's hard to be frightened of a beast when at last you understand it. Porter's explanation is evidence-based, logical, and accessible, using the best information out there. I would recommend it to anyone.

This book really makes sense. It takes a long time of drinking to become an alcoholic. It is not a disease. It is a learned habit to deal with all kinds of emotions and stress. It is a choice that can be stopped.

having everything in life to be happy, and everything to lose

This book answered for me some questions I I could not answer for myself or explain to my close ones:
Why, having everything in life to be happy, and everything to lose, am I still drinking, even after a serious diagnosis?
Why, having quit once and truly forgetting about it, then restarting briefly, quitting the second time doesn't work so well?
Why is the professional advice to gradually cut down to one unit a day wrong?
Why is there no such thing as just one drink, or just one night, and then I'll stop?
Why does AA not work for me (or many others)?
I want to thank this author for doing all the hard work and research to produce this most intelligent, easy-to-understand, and most of all, HELPFUL book. There are no "10 steps" or "Easy way" to anything, especially not this. But it is worth doing, if you want your life back.
