Not Stupid by Any Means...Gems for Life

Mr. Ofili has written a gem of a book filled with pearls of wisdom. He shares with readers 18 ways to have a better life by making the right choices. His conclusions are underscored by news stories, anecdotes, and moments from his own life when he realized that he was doing something wrong and that there was a better way to handle the situation.

I appreciate how candidly he drew from his own experiences and lightened up the book with humor. I enjoyed his funny and telling sketches to illustrate (literally) his points. I liked the stories that tackled tough issues, from growing up in another culture, racism, a tendency to overanalyze, and financial challenges, among others. While the life's lessons the author shared are grounded in common sense, he packaged them in an easy-to-read, thought-provoking book. His stories made me want to know more about his personal life, but I'll have to wait for him to share more if he writes a follow-on book.

If there's any reason to give this book 4 out of 5 stars, it's because it ends before you know it, and the wisdom he imparts is quite fleeting. It's not the kind of book that those seeking help to change their own lives can rely on for solid advice. The author does not take enough time to help the reader apply it to their own lives or even sink in. It's a great read for what it offers. His advice might not be equally applicable to all, but he left it up to readers to decide if they agree with his advice. Not everyone is an engineer or has an engineer's mind (myself included), but his anecdotes cut across a wide demographic.

I recommend this book to anyone who prefers to learn life's lessons from others than the hard way -- on their own.

This isn't a self help book, but it sure gives you a lot of help!!!! The authors narration of his personal experiences gives one a lot to think about. A very good read, well written and it can save your life too.

Very Good Book

This book is a very good book. The girl this book is written about has had visions since a very young age and they have always come true. Now she has a vision that all adults will die from a disease within seven years. This book does talk a lot about death so this is not a book for younger readers or people prone to worrying that the world may come to an end. There must be another book that follows this one because I want to know the ending to this story.

Just ok

This is a kindle freebie I acquired, part 1 of a series. A young girl has visions of a disease coming which will kill all adults and what the children must do to survive. A twist on the "plague" post-apocalyptic concept, so I began to read. In this first installation, the girl tells her family, and they proceed to contact the people the girl says will make this happen and start building their compound.

The storyline was ok, the characters were ok; however everything only hit my "ok" button. Nothing really causes the book to stand out for me. There was nothing intriguing in the set up, and the characters, while believable, seem to lack something in the development. This book is only around "novella" length--estimated 62 pages. While I don't regret the time I spent reading this book, I will not be looking at the rest of the series.

"And a little child shall lead them"

When she was 3 years old, Hannah woke in the middle of the night screaming for her mother, Leah. She told her mother that she needed to go to the door because the police were coming to tell her that "grandpa" was dead. Leah told her that Grandpa is fine and that she has just had a bad dream. But just then there's a knock at the door and it's the police telling them that Leah's father has just been killed in a auto accident.

Nine years later, 12-year old Hannah has another vision and tells her parents, "Everyone over the age of 20 in the entire world is going to die. We have six years to prepare for it." Her visions also tell her what she needs to do to bring a group of children together into a type of "commune" to begin preparing for the end of the world as they know it and to prepare them to become the "Adams and Eves" for the new world. (Does this remind anyone else of "Lord of the Flies"?)

This is book one of a five-book series and I'm not very fond of those. I don't mind purchasing additional books in a series to find out what happens to secondary characters but I don't like to be left hanging so that I have to buy another book to tell me how the current book I am reading will end. I certainly don't like having to buy multiple other books to learn the ending. I look at this as the "hook" book that draws you into buying the entire Chasing Destiny series. In it's defense, the additional books in this series cost only $0.99 each so that's less than $4.00 for the entire five-book series. This still is not real high on my list of books I love.

About the Author

Good but not enough.

This is a pretty good book for the most part. It gives lots of words for different situations and shows their common connections. I just wish there was more example sentences as well as an index for what pages the words are on. The words are still easy to find given the situations of Home, Daily life, People, School & Work, Travel and Entertainment in the contents. Overall I would recommend this book to any one who can read hiragana and katakana the formatting is much nicer than the authors other titles and you can just flip through any section when your board since there is no structure to follow.

Great study aid!

Book is very helpful in displaying the information needed on how common phrases should be worded in Japanese. The sections are well thought out. I use this as a reference many times through studying and to help translate.

Very Useful for serious learners.

This book is geared towards more serious learners and not for someone whose just wanting to learn something for a short trip to japan, so if you're interested in only learning something minor or not continuing your studies, then this book is not for you. That being said, it's a extremely useful book for hardcore learners of the Japanese language. This book is more of a reference book but it gives detailed explanations on how exactly a word should be said so you know how and when to use it. It'll definitely make you sound and feel more natural in the Japanese language.

This book does not have a index but the well organized table of context does make up as a good substitute. Also, there is no romanji (which is good thing), so you do need to know hiragana and katakana before picking up this book. This book does use furigana so you don't have to know the kanji right off. I would suggest this book for upper-beginner to intermediate learners. One neat feature is that there is a Appendix at the end of the book that visually shows you correct and incorrect collocations (word pairings).

I already love this book and can see me using it for a long time to come.

This book is essentially a prayer book containing several different prayer programmes of which one is that of 'Jehu Prayers' It is recommended for those who are already accustomed to spiritual warfare praying at the highest level. The nature of King Jehu, a former army commander to drive furiously and kill mercilessly was used by God to eliminate the house of King Ahab who propagated Baal worship in the land. These prayers reflect that radical nature required to break the occult power of their witchcraft, and are accurately bible based and cover all aspects of the scenes of elimination. Personally, I would prefer a less heavy book with the contents giving page numbers, similar to Prayer Rain or Prayer Passport. However the prayers are powerful with unfolding spiritual revelation imparted to the author in more recent times that would touch deep areas in deliverance ministry. It is extremely relevant and highly recommended for today.

This is the forgotten story of the Second Iowa Infantry and one of the most stirring chapters in the annals of Iowa and the Civil War. The regiment was the first enlisted in the state for three years' service, and the 989 men mustered into its ranks were the first Iowa troops to take the field in June, 1861. Fully 2,000 Iowans fought and died in the service of this gallant regiment before the end of the war. Nearly half of them succumbed to exposure and disease or fell in a score of bitter battles. Few regiments of the Civil War volunteers had a more notable battle record. The men of the Second Iowa led Grant's victorious charge on Fort Donelson in February, 1862, to give the North its first good news of the war. They fought stubbornly in the "Hornet's Nest" at the bloody battle of Shiloh, and suffered nearly one-third of their 346 officers and men killed or wounded in helping to repulse the Confederate attack at Corinth, Mississippi, in October. The survivors of the Second Iowa returned to their homes and families in July, 1865, having endured their full share of misery and horror of the war. The brief but valuable recollections of Lt. John T. Bell provide one of the few remaining original sources of a fighting regiment of Civil War volunteers. Lieutenant Colonel John Bell rose from the ranks at the age of 19 to become company commander after joining the Second Iowa Infantry in December, 1861.

The 2nd Iowa Infantry-Heroes of the Hornet's Nest

Tramps & Triumphs of the Second Iowa Infantry, written by veteran John T. Bell. Is a reprint of an earlier work, but unlike the Xeroxed or scanned reprints this book is entirely re-printed so there are no smudges, missing words, or other flaws.

The Second Iowa Infantry was one of the Grant's critical Mid-west regiments at Fort Donelson and at the Hornet's Nest at the Battle of Shiloh. The author ably recounts these and other battles. However, there is no mention of the larger strategy.

The author is also surprisingly hostile to blacks during the conflict. Negative remarks are made about the regiment's cooks as well as the looting by newly freed slaves during the March to the Sea. The author is also highly critical of the quick march made after the surrender towards Washington DC by the Union Army. Many die of sunstroke and exhaustion. This remark is repeated by every regimental history that made the hike.

An easy read, can be finished in an afternoon.

As a Korean American, I'm impressed!

Some background: I was born and raised in the States but my parents are immigrants from Korea. I've never been to Korea, and I don't know many Koreans so I never was able to practice it. I speak some Korean, but it's broken at times and super informal.

I've been interested in brushing up on my Korean because there are such large gaps in my knowledge- my mother spoke to me in Korean, but never had the time to teach it, and neither were sure how to explain many of the grammatical rules. Looking back, they were probably too busy trying to learn English!

I've tried a few intermediate books in the past, but none really provided what I needed so I decided to start at the very beginning. This book has been an easy (and surprisingly fun) read :) I'm on chapter 3 and I've learned at least two new things about grammar so far! Great work, Billy!

Good recourse for beginners

I'm about half way through the book so far, and I feel like I've used it enough to leave a thoughtful and (hopefully) helpful review. The first thing that you should know is that this probably isn't the best "stand alone" book. It's not a textbook, so it's not going to have everything that you need to learn the language. It IS, however, very helpful for a beginner to gain a lot of basic understanding to the language and how grammar fits Korean sentences together. The information is pretty clearly laid out and is to-the-point. Not a lot of unnecessary confusing topics right off the bat, and then it goes a bit deeper into complex rules later on. It's set up in a format that is really easy for me to follow. I really like this book and will definitely move on to the others as I continue learning the language.

That being said, there are a few things that I would have liked to see, especially in a beginner's book. Some of these are entirely preferential, so if you're okay with these things missing, then that's okay.

Use of a "handwriting" font is extremely confusing. It took about 8 chapters before I felt comfortable reading the Hangul font, and I was often copying down the WRONG spelling due to my complete inability to read that font. I would have liked to see the first chapter or two have both the typical font and the handwriting font for all the words in order to better familiarize the differences between the two fonts. Only occasionally in later chapters are new concepts introduced with the cleaner font, but most new words are in the handwriting font.

Though there are audio files available on the site (which are very useful), they are only of the conversations. This is good for listening practice, but there are a lot of new words introduced in each chapter and (especially as a beginner), you kind of have to guess at what they sound like. There's an in-depth Appendix on pronunciation rules, but very few people will read and retain all the rules, and you often find yourself learning a mispronunciation and can't identify the word if you hear it elsewhere. It'd be nice if on vocab words that have special pronunciation, if there was a bit of a reminder "hey, this looks like this, but is pronounced like this!"

Not enough repetition. Again, totally preferential, but I find myself diligently taking notes through out a chapter, do the 6-10 lines of practice at the end, and then moving on to the next chapter without realizing I'm not ready due to a lack of real structure in the chapter's end. There are lists and lists and lists of vocab words, most of which were not used in the chapter. It'd just be nice to see a bit more repetition, a bit more "work" in order to drive home concepts that were taught during a chapter.

Even with these minor flaws, I still find this to be a helpful book, and I recommend it to anyone learning Korean. It's a valuable source of information and the narration style is comfortable, easy to read (not like a dry textbook).

Edit after finishing the book:
Of all the resources that I've been using for learning the language, this one is definitely my favorite. It explains things pretty well and gives you a bit of cultural insight. Right now I'm just going through again to review each chapter. There are a few things that I'd already forgotten, but the rest of it is really sticking with me. I already purchased the second book, and I'll definitely get the third later on. I'm updating my review from 4 stars to 5 stars. Thanks!

Best Beginner's Korean Book I have found!

I have been learning foreign languages for many many years - and Korean is one of my favorites. I have bought just about every book on the subject known to the English Speaking World. This book is by far the best for beginners. The vocabulary is very relevant to the beginner. The pronunciation and grammar explanations are to the point and very easy to follow. There are practice exercises with an answer key. And there are really great Cultural Notes that are so important when learning a non-european language. And lastly, it complements the author's Youtube video series called "Learn Korean with Go! Billy Korean". So if you really want to learn Korean in a pleasant, easy to follow, and totally beginner friendly course - Buy this Book! I just can't say enough good things about this book!

Reading Khalo's wildly funny tirades against Andre Breton and other French surrealists ("coocooo lunatic son of bitches") is a unique and worthwhile pleasure, but this book's finest offerings are its photographs, though the results are of uneven merit. The many casual snapshots have a patina of unearned nostalgia-an effect that will satisfy many, but leave others feeling as if they're sifting through yellowed photos in an antique store. The standout images are Muray's more formal portraits of his lover. The photographic techniques available to Muray in the late '30s and early '40s created layered colors that have an almost painted effect, and are delicious to look at now. Khalo was both a woman and a myth-complicated, challenging, talented and, perhaps, masochistic (or so the Khalo specialist Grimberg asserts in the book's one essay)-but readers will see these qualities best through Muray's photographs, not Khalo's letters.

More than just another biography

This book, authored by the "Kahlo Guru" Salomon Grimberg, is not just another Kahlo biography nor is it just another book of Kahlo photos. This book tells of a love story between the photographer Nickolas Muray and the painter Frida Kahlo. Written in somewhat of a biographical format, it begins with Muray's life "before Kahlo" followed by Kahlo's life "before Muray"... and then they meet. When these two icons collide, the love story begins. This book captures the most intimate moments of that secret relationship as told through their love letters and the many photographs taken by Muray. 56 of those photos, some never before published, are shown in this book in full color and duotone plates.

This book begins with a one page acknowledgement written by Grimberg. In the back of the book there is a 3 page chronology of Nickolas. Following that is an index of 88 known photos of Frida taken by Muray, complete with a thumbnail photo and identifying information.

When you've read of all the mundane biographies and want to read something more personal about Frida, then this book is for you. Although it's a love story, it's just another tragic chapter in Kahlo's anything but ordinary life.
