Doug Marschke is an engineering graduate from the University of Michigan currently a principal partner at Proteus Networks. He is JNCIE-ER #3, JNCIE-M #41 and JNCIS-FW, JNCIA certified. He is a writer of various Juniper certification exams and co-writer of the JNCIE Enterprise Exam. He has also authored the JUNOS Enterprise Routing book, and coming in 2009, JUNOS Enterprise Switching. Doug currently spends his time working with both service providers and enterprises to optimize their IP networks for better performance, cost and reliability. He has spent the last 6 month working on a next generation government satellite network. He also flies around the world and back sharing his knowledge in a variety of training classes and seminars with topics ranging from troubleshooting, design and certification preparation. If Doug is not on the road, you can find him at his bar in San Francisco, Taco Shop at Underdogs, discussing a wide variety of topics. He has also recently started a new company Funny How Films, producing independent films such as Amsterdam Heavy and Mad Cow.

Jeff Doyle, CCIE No. 1919, is a professional services consultant with Juniper Networks, Inc., in Denver, Colorado. Specializing in IP routing protocols and MPLS traffic engineering, Jeff has helped design and implement large-scale Internet service provider networks throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.

The authors did a brilliant job in defining clearly what is SDN. The fog has cleared in my head on the relationship between cloud, virtualization, SDN, OpenFlow and OpenStack. A lot of the buzz words out in the industry are clearly explained through example in this book. An excellent introductory into the fundamentals of SDN. I am eagerly waiting for volume 2! I will be the first person to purchase the volume 2 :) . Thumbs up!

All Network Engineers Aboard!

This book starts off with a very brief, but concise depiction of why we have a data plane, and control plane. And even more so, it explains the reason how all these different convergence addons (LISP, BFD, etc) evolved. Then it gets to why SDN would alleviate all of that, plus vendor-specific knowledge about implementation of networking protocols, etc. I am just in the middle of the 3rd chapter, and I must say, I couldn't have become interested in SDN at a better time (except for day one, wink). But now that it has evolved, and is on the forefront, I see this as another "disruption" in the field of networking. So as a network engineer, i'm climbing aboard now!

Excellent Overview of Basic Wave Theory

This is book is a little strange but still very good. It could be thought of as a modern version of Lighthill's "Waves in Fluids". It first assumes that you are familiar with a pretty wide range of mathematical tools, and also that you have the necessary experience to handle long calculations. If you're comfortable with the method of stationary phase and contour integration but you've never studied acoustics or shocks, then this book is probably a worthwhile read. It's also good as an introduction to more advanced areas such as solitons, although the book by Johnson and Drazin (Solitons: An Introduction) is probably a better resource. I would have liked a chapter on waves of importance in geophysics though, such as internal gravity waves, Coriolis waves, and Rossby waves. It would have made the book an even better resource.

Wave Motion

This modern book has considerable breadth and depth, and is ideally suited as a reference text as well as a text for upper class under graduate and graduate courses. It treats acoustic waves, waves in elastic media, fluid dynamical waves, electromagnetic waves and more. The material is clearly presented, including excellent illustrations. At the same time, it is mathematically rigorous and thereby equally appropriate as a text for applied mathematics as well as engineering courses and study. Each of the book's twelve chapters ends with a set of homework problems, for which the authors have assembled a comprehensive well organized instructor's solution manual.

Not a good textbook for beginners in the subject

This book is not for a person beginning to study waves. Even with a strong mathematical background, many of the physical explanations in the book are vague and often confusing. The authors need to spend a little more time developing the student's intuition. What seems obvious to them is not obvious to the novice. The book is well-written in the sense that the text flows well, and I imagine especially well for the expert. This book would make a good reference for someone with more experience in the subject matter.

He expects to find men “engaged in a genial hobby, happy to spend a few hours a week escaping the pressures of contemporary life.” Instead he uncovers a world of extremes–extreme commitment, extreme passion, and extreme differences of approach. For instance, Malcolm Furlow, holed up on his ranch in the wilderness of New Mexico, insists that model railroading is defined by scenery and artistic self-expression. On the other hand, Tony Koester, a New Jersey modeler, believes his “mission” is to replicate, with fanatical precision and authenticity, the way a real railroad operates. Going to extremes himself, Posey actually “test drives” a real steam engine in Strasburg, Pennsylvania, in an attempt to understand the great machines that inspired the models and connect us to a time when “the railroad was inventing America.” Timeless and original, Playing with Trains reveals a classic, questing American world.

Former sportswriter and Grand Prix racer Posey captures the perennial American obsession with model railroading in this joyful combination of memoir, cultural history and love letter. Those who owned electric trains as kids will delight in Posey's retelling of his early love of Lionel trains, as well as his recounting of such details as the fact that Pope Pius XII, "in full ecclesiastical garb, posed with Lionel equipment in the Vatican." After his loyalty switches to smaller HO-scale trains, which at first seem more economical for a set he wants to build for his young son, the author soon finds himself confronting the essential truth of HO life: "people with HO layouts rarely bought their accessories, they made them." Most of the book's first half recounts the construction of Posey's 16-year masterpiece, a recreation of the Colorado Midland Railway. The author's concise descriptions of his various models are enthralling and often funny, such as the model of his friend Paul Newman's impeccably clean Newman's Own food company headquarters; Posey playfully makes it into a harmful sewage polluter with lazy, card-playing workers, one of whom "looked suspiciously like Newman himself." The book's second half is equally absorbing, as Posey meets with, profiles and discusses model railroading with some of the nation's top modelers.

Feel like a kid again

The book is broken into three main parts: 1) Sam's youth, 2) Building his dream HO layout as an adult, and 3) Visiting infamous layouts and other established specialty modelers throughout the country.

In Part 1: Sam's very personal account on his decades long journey through the hobby of model railroading is akin to watching the wonderment of a child opening presents on Christmas morning. Sam recounts his first memories of having a Lionel set with his mother through numerous heart warming stories, and these memories continue on through the years while gaining a new step-father and his own adolescence. From collecting cereal box-tops, paper route savings, and shoe boxes that stood in for scale buildings, it was a treat. The care and craft he puts into these stories makes the reader very aware of his passion of the hobby, and I found myself getting just as excited as he was, as if I was part of the memory myself they were so vivid. I thoroughly enjoyed this and totally wanted more.

In Part 2: At this point Sam is a married man himself and finds himself being drawn back into the hobby to share with his own son and daughter, but falls into the trap all of us do....our own addiction and fun take over for those of our children and Sam is soon consumed by building his own personal dream layout. Here, he acquires a partner in crime, Rolf, from a local hobby shop who helps him spend many an hour down in the basement as they recreate their own world from their imaginations. Sam offers up a personal account of an illness that affects his movements, but he is not to be deterred and enlists the help of his wife and other characters to fulfill and advance his dream into becoming reality.

In Part 3: Sam takes his interest on the road and visits various fellow modelers throughout the country to get their take on the hobby, or is it an 'art' at this point. He finds additional respect for the human imagination and ingenuity with these interesting personalities along the way and takes a little bit from each of them to add to his own. Whether its the prototypical dead-on details of one versus the whimsy and dream like appearance of another, he concludes there is no 'right' way to build a layout, they are ALL right in their own way.

The only drawback I had for this book was the limited and small amount of black and white pictures all clustered together in the middle. I would have liked to have seen some additional family pictures from the early years, some more detailed or larger pics throughout, and even some color pics as well. It just felt wrong that all the pictures were crammed together in the middle and felt disjointed as the book takes place over a continuum of Sam's life.

A Fine Romp Thru Model Railroading

Okay... it isn't exactly the layout I would build, or the way I'd go about it, but Sam Posey has written a fun account of one man's model railroading experience. And added some great thoughts on other layouts and modelers he's experienced. And he's indirectly added a nice touch by showing that all (perhaps even most) model railroaders are not wierd dweebs who run around in engineer caps, counting rivets.

And I really liked his (very subtle) put down of the non-modelers who are so entirely caught up in operation, and who have in recent years (my thoughts, not Mr. Posey's) been trying to dominate the hobby, much to its detriment.

A really enjoyable book. Would probably even be so for non-model railroaders.

Indeed, a passion beyond scale...

This is a wonderful book. Sam Posey, known to most people only as a highly successful race car driver and/or Emmy-winning broadcaster, uses a description of the construction of his basement HO-scale train layout-- 6,000 hours of work over 16 years-- to anchor a broader examination of model railroading. He describes some issues in the design and construction of layouts, and he interviews some of the stars of the hobby.

That would be a good enough book, but Posey goes beyond that to examine the phenomenon of men and boys playing with trains, and, further, the nature of obsession. The message is that while the people who build elaborate model railroad layouts may indeed be obsessive, obsessions that are passions for excellence are not necessarily problematical.

At one point, Posey considers a simple question about his own layout: When is enough enough? The answer for him is "never," and that's probably the answer anyone passionate about anything would give.

Posey is an intelligent, articulate observer of the most challenging subject of all: himself. The result of his study is this outstanding book. I bought it because I'm a fan of Posey's racing and broadcasting, and I'm mildly interested in trains. I was rewarded far, far beyond my expectations.

Hooks's essays on film are not film criticism: they are criticism of culture as viewed through the prism of film. This mix of theory, reality, popular art and popular criticism (reviews and public reaction play a large part in her discussions) is effective in forcing a rethinking of the films in question. A reading of reviews of Exotica shows that only the strip-joint portions of the movie were considered worthy of commentary. Quentin Tarantino?a filmmaker "not afraid to publicly pimp his wares"?is taken to task for ingesting superficial aspects of black culture and spitting out the rest. The "mock feminism" of Waiting to Exhale ("an utterly boring show") is exposed as hooks examines differences between the book and the movie. The essays that do not focus on a single film are equally successful: a discussion of the black female gaze recalls that slaves could be punished for looking, and another on representations of black masculinity notes that in movies with two male leads, one black and one white, such as Rising Sun, the white man plays the "father" role. The essays could have benefited from more thoughtful organization. Hooks refers to her first-ever film-related essay, on Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It, in her introduction and elsewhere, but the essay does not appear until the final pages of the book. A piece on the accountability of filmmakers that involves Wayne Wang would have matched up nicely with a dialogue with Wang, which instead is sandwiched in a group of interviews with Arthur Jaffa, Camille Billops and the like.

An excellent book that really gives you something to think about as she examines race, sex and class in America through the movies. I really enjoyed reading her feminist views, and her interviews with filmmakers Charles Burnett, Camille Billops, and AJ (Arthur Jafa).
