We should not forget educators like Frank Thompson, Dorothy Noad, Stephen Smith, and Kenneth Matiba before he was destroyed by politics. My family was privileged to be connected to Hillcrest over a period of twenty-five years, and this book containing anecdotes, reminiscences and historical facts has brought so much back to me.

Fueled by the purest motives they can muster, the men battle the seduction of vice to give Hanna a chance, and discover for themselves that true character doesn’t drown easily.
From the Author
I started writing this book in the late 1980s, and finished it about ten years ago. It is fictional but based largely on my experiences and observations of my friends. I set the story in New Orleans, painting my own interpretation of places I familiarized myself with while my son was a student at Tulane University. The characters are born of a very real conglomerate of the memories I’ve formed over the years, and those memories have become a vehicle to explore things about myself. I used the character Byron Burns, based on the mannerisms of a friend now gone, as a way to express my ambition as a writer. Like the character Hanna, I grew up somewhat disadvantaged, and in many ways her story is mine. I was friends with a man whose name was Bobby Long. His character in the story is loosely based on my observations of his personality, although the novel is in no way meant to depict events in his life—only the lessons I learned from it: that goodness can occur far from conventional morality, and beautiful things can look ugly at first glance. Before my friend Bobby Long died several years ago, he asked my son Grayson to write a song about him. My son titled the song “A Love Song for Bobby Long.” Bobby had said to me many times over the years, “Boy, you’re going to write a book about me one of these days.” And so I have. Redemption, simple and honest as the streets.

Down in those neighborhoods, near the levees, when the wind is Easterly, you can smell the river, right down through the drink in your Go-Cup. In the narrow backyards and through the trees, you can find the folks in author Capps' book. They don't really look much like the folks in that movie they made from it.

Now, the movie is a lot of fun, and a good story, but this is really another story. This one's about the folks most of us have pretended not to know, pretended not to "get", or pretended we couldn't see. As unbelievable as the story and characters may appear to be at fi5rst glance, they settle right in and the reader is left with a portrait of the human spirit that's very moving and very intimate.

If you haven't been around the block a few times, or down on your luck, or haven't walked along with a bottle in a bag, don't bother. If you have, you'll find some old friends here and you might even learn a thing or three.

Let's talk about creepy old men

Comparing the book with the movie would not be fair to the movie, which is one of my favorites. The book was a complete disappointment. The old men characters are kind of creepy, always having dirty thoughts about the 16 year old girl who came to live with them, getting to the point of touch her underwear when she wasn't at home and smelled it.
I don't know what annoyed me more, the fact of these old men trying to get a so much younger girl to bed, or the fact that this girl decided to stay with them.

Good Book

This is a great read. It is not exactly like the movie which is what I thought anyway. I watched the movie "A Love Song for Bobby Long and I really loved the movie. The book is just as great as the movie. This was an excellent buy!

His conversion came from his father's patient admonitions from Scripture. It was the verse, Proverbs 14:12, 'there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death,' which particularly struck his heart and compelled him to renounce Theosophy and follow Jesus.

Arthur W. Pink has held various pastorates in the United States. He has been engaged in Bible conference work in the United States, Australia, and other countries and resided in Scotland up until the time of his death, July 15, 1952. Pink was the author of various books and booklets on Bible exposition, as well as the editor and publisher of a Bible study magazine, Studies in the Scriptures.

Spiritual Gold

How to rightly apply the truths of Scripture in our lives is the essence of practical christianity. Pink gives us a Biblical perspective on how to view Christian doctrine on p.135,"There is no doctrine revealed in Scripture for a merely speculative knowledge,but all is to exert a powerful influence upon conduct. God's design in all that he has revealed to us is to the purefying of our affections and the transforming of our characters." The Christian ought always to have this in view,that my desire to know more of God's truth is that by His grace I may walk in the light of it. Some of the most helpful things Mr.Pink has written on experimental christianity are found in this book. The keeping of the heart is rightly set forth as the great concern that it ought to be in the life of every believer. Pink gives some very helpful definitions as to what the keeping of the heart is. For example on p.100 "To keep the heart means striving to shut out from it all that is opposed to God...God is a jealous God and will brook no rival;He claims the throne of our hearts,and requires to be loved by us supremely." This book will be of immense help to anyone who would like to know how they may so live,as to increasingly honour God in their daily lives.

Pink really lays down the bones of the christian faith in a way that will make you search your soul. Through the prayerful reading of this book you will have to chose to either put it down or conform your life as the Holy Spirit will convict. I have grown tremendously both spiritually and practically through the reading of this book.

Arthur W. Pink's unique ability to bring God's Word to practical application for the Christian believer is best described in one word, "conviction." Practical Christianity starts with the process of salvation and walks you through how to live a God pleasing life. Pink's Calvinistic theology will drive you to your knees in prayer and repentance and then show you the blessings God has for you in this life and the next. This is a must read for every Christian.

About the Author
Professor of English at Central Washington University, Loretta Gray has three degrees related to her interest in composition and applied linguistics: Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language (School for International Training), Master of Arts in Spanish (Middlebury College), and Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Linguistics (Boston University). She has experience teaching English to non-native speakers in Mexico, Spain, and the United States. In addition, she taught Spanish at Clemson University and applied linguistics at the School for International Training. Dr. Gray has been teaching composition and applied linguistics courses at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington, since 1992. She also is co-author of the textbook RHETORICAL GRAMMAR.

Fascinating exploration of how to achieve various rhetorical effects by making different grammatical choices

For many people, grammar is a dry, boring subject with pedantic rules and arcane terms that seem far removed from everyday language. In this textbook and reference guide, the authors demonstrate how the thoughtful and creative use of grammar can help a writer to achieve a variety of interesting, memorable, provocative and persuasive effects. In thirteen chapters, the authors discuss various ways of using grammatical choices to construct, modify, and improve sentences and phrases, and make thoughtful word choices that can help a writer to communicate more effectively.

The Preface indicates the book is intended for students in composition classes, but beginning writers and writers unfamiliar with modern or classical rhetoric could find this book challenging and somewhat difficult to follow. Although the book is written for students in composition classes, a non-student interested in learning different ways to develop and improve his or her writing could find it a useful reference guide.

Readers interested in this book should also consider taking a look at Jeanne Fahnestock, Rhetorical Style: The Uses of Language in Persuasion and Sister Miriam Joseph, Shakespeare's Use of the Arts of Language.

Riddled with Errors

This book is riddled with errors. Towards the end, in the style chapter, my class found an entire concept where every example was completely contradictory to the definition. The style of the book makes it very readable, but these errors are shameful because they are not merely typos (though there are some of those) but mistakes that interfere with basic understanding of the concepts it is trying to teach.

Not Bad; Not Great.

This was a required text for a class called "The English Language". To be fair, we did not read the entire book -- only about half of the chapters.

The writing is clear and easy to understand, but it is dry and dull to read. The goal of the book is to help you make better use of the language. I suspect if you can stay awake and focused long enough, the book might succeed in its goal.

Be sure to be up on all your grammar terminology before diving in. It will help you understand sentences like these in the "reminder" sections of each chapter:
"Have I set off metadiscourse markers with commas where an emphasis on the marker would be useful?"
or
"Have I used the there-transformation and cleft sentences effectively--but not too frequently?"

If you're not having to use this book for a class, I'd pass. If you're looking for help with basic grammar, this isn't it -- this is grammar on an advanced level.

I generally keep school books for reference, but I'm happily giving this one to the library.

Noble spins her own take on an old Ukrainian legend that, according to an author’s note, reminds her of her own childhood in snowy Michigan. On Christmas Eve, a poor peasant woman has nothing for her children for Christmas. She can only buy a spool of thread for mending and a meager soup bone at the market. When the children are tucked into bed, she fetches a small tree from the forest but later falls asleep making sewing patterns for ornaments. As fortune would have it, the tree is the home of a mother spider and her children. Feeling a kinship with the peasant, the mother spider covers the tree with beautiful spun patterns. Costanzas mix of warm colors and dense blue hues convey an old-world feeling, with both mothers wearing babushkas. Today, seeing a spider on Christmas will supposedly bring good fortune for a whole year. The parallel stories in this lesser-known Christmas tale emphasize the selflessness of a mother’s love. Christmas Spider Miracle

This is a wonderful childrens Christmas story about the "Christmas Spider" and a Mother's love for her children along with the sadness of having no money for gifts. It tells the story how one mother helps out another to make Christmas special for the children. Why it is good luck to place a Spider ornament on your tree is revealed.

A great story for the family

I picked this book up at the library and I am glad I did. It's a Ukrainian tale and it has such deep meaning in this age of more more more. It's a simple tall of sharing what you have and helping someone out. It was a beautiful book to share with my family at Christmas.

This book is a great way to include traditions and stories of other cultures into your kids lives and the Christmas season. It's a great story based on a Ukrainian tale and beautifully illustrated.
