I read this book in one sleepless night. The Promise of Protection is the hair-raising story of a woman who had a love affair with a made man, and then must flee with her children when the truth about her "friend" and his business threatens her and her family's life.
It's also the story of an incredibly strong woman who navigates life and love and dire circumstances, and comes out stronger in the end.
The fact that it's a true story chills and uplifts me at the same time.

Exciting story that will take you on a roller coaster ride of emotions. It's a fun read that will encompasses everything from romance to action. That fact that this is a true story still blows my mind. Great read about a woman's whose world is turned upside town after learned some truths about the man she's fallen in love with.

A Powerful Memoir That Valiantly Engages The Reader

In her riveting memoir, The Promise of Protection: A True Story of Witness Protection, Christine K. Lowrie invites the reader for a ride down the rapids. We travel with Celi as she navigates with skill forged from a bruised life experience, intelligence, courage, wit and vulnerability. The reader cheers for Celi while desperately trying to warn her, as both the story and fear unfold. Yearning for romance and family, Celi's choices are central to the telling of her story. The characters that populate the pages evoke a parallel sense of hope and desperation. The reader comes to know whom to dread.

Anyone who hails from the '60s will find familiar sites and sounds along the way. Ms. Lowrie turns a phrase with color while deferring to the detailed memories of a woman who came of age in the pre-and post Vietnam era. She provides an artful balance of place, mood and style. Although trusting Ms. Lowrie to get Celi safely to the shallows, the only option for the reader is to keep a firm grip as Celi employs every ounce of intellect, cunning and courage to keep her family safely on the run from organized crime.

Celi's search for protection is threaded throughout, as she also navigates the inner landscape of her life. It is through this adventure that Ms. Lowrie invites the reader to consider his/her own life decisions and the compelling consequences of love; often characterized by loss that is hopefully burnished to resilience. Celi's search requires her to orienteer through this inner landscape and to consider the wider possibilities. There is more to explore. From the heart of her humanness, Ms. Lowrie leaves the reader with the same compelling invitation.

This is a powerful memoir that valiantly engages the reader. I highly recommend it!

I bought this "personalized" book to have my nephew's name added as a gift to him. The book arrived quickly and in good condition - with another child's name already printed in it! These books are not personalized FOR YOU! They were previously personalized for someone else with their first and last name and now are simply resold as a "used" book. I contacted the seller about this and they indicated the posting would be updated to reflect that YOU cannot have the book personalized for yourself. Jay Nichols is the former managing editor of Fly Fisherman magazine and lives in Pennsylvania. Charlie Craven co-owns Charlie’s Fly Box, a fly shop in Arvada, Colorado, and is a top-selling signature fly designer for Umpqua Feather Merchants. Craven is the Fly Tier’s Bench columnist for Fly Fisherman and author of Charlie Craven’s Basic Fly Tying: Modern Techniques for Flies That Catch Fish and Charlie’s Fly Box: Signature Flies for Fresh and Salt Water. He is also featured in the recent Fly Fisherman magazine DVDs Warmwater Fly Tying and Saltwater Fly Tying. He lives in Palmer Lake, Colorado, with his wife, Lisa, two giant dogs, and a slew of children. Paul Weamer is Fly Fisherman magazine’s Mid Atlantic Field Editor and the author, or coauthor, of five fly-fishing books. Paul has been a professional fly tier, licensed fly-fishing guide, and co-owner or manager of three highly successful fly-fishing shops and guide services in New York and Pennsylvania. He currently resides with his wife, Ruthann, and his English Mastiff, Midge, along Penns Creek in Coburn, Pennsylvania. Paul Weamer lives near State College, Pennsylvania.

Another in a string of very well done fly tying books, which seem to have several things in common; Jay Nichols and Headwaters Books doing the publishing, and a lot of photography by Charlie Craven, who has raised the bar on step by step photography with his last 2 books. Good assortment of patterns, great pictures, and engaging text. This is not a complete manual on every style of dry fly, but it does not claim to be. The patterns it describes are widely useful and should provide the tools to take on most other types of dries.

As China turned away from the excesses of the Cultural Revolution and experienced the adoption and challenges of market practices, alternatives were sought to the prevailing socialist morality. Beginning in the 1980s and continuing through the years, ideas, images, behaviors, and attitudes associated with Confucianism have come back into public and private life. In this volume, scholars from a wide range of disciplines explore the contemporary Confucian revival in China, looking at Confucianism and the state, intellectual life, and popular culture. Contributors note how the revival of Confucianism plays out in a variety of ways, from China’s relationship with the rest of the world, to views of capitalism and science, to blockbuster movies and teenage fashion.

Kenneth J. Hammond is Professor of History at New Mexico State University. He is the author of Pepper Mountain: The Life, Death, and Posthumous Career of Yang Jisheng, the editor of The Human Tradition in Premodern China, and the coeditor (with Kristin Stapleton) of The Human Tradition in Modern China.

Jeffrey L. Richey is Associate Professor of Religion and Asian Studies at Berea College. He is the author of Confucius in East Asia: Confucianism s History in China, Korea, Japan, and Viet Nam and the editor of Teaching Confucianism.

The Sage Has Not Returned!

Do not buy this book. It is dry and somewhat academic, and this is from the perspective of someone who has four shelves of chinese history in his library. I find the evidence for the sage returning somewhat lacking and superficial, and I wonder how many among Chinese masses really understand Confucius. A better read is Lu Xun's essay "Confucius and Modern China" in David Pollard's book Chinese Essays; this is a must read. Also excellent is an article entitled "Talking Back To The Master" by Yuming He in the Norton Critical Edition of The Analects of Confucius.

Typical

DNF. I got to the 34% Mark and couldn't go further. There's nothing original here. Spoiled, rich, college girl who insists she isn't spoiled and does absolutely nothing to show that she isn't spoiled is our heroine. She throws herself at our hero in a club and then blames him for not taking her up on the invitation. Her narrative digs for sympathy. Nope, can't find any. Let me dig a little deeper. Nope, I'm fresh out of give-a-d@mn for our heroine. Our hero is a bit less well drawn. He had a rough life, made some extremely poor choices, and still pays for them. He's not exactly sympathetic either and I can't figure out why he would want to guard the bratty, entitled princess if not for the paycheck. He's a bit of a man-whore, but he's not doing the pursuing, merely accepting the invitations received and not pretending that those encounters are anything but sordid.

Aside from the stock characters, the content is riddled with errors. Plurals and apostrophes are not the same. Some words are misspelled (midriff, not mid-drift; lip-synch, not lip-sing). IOW, the book needs editing.

The final slam is the alternating narrative point of view. It's an affectation that I dislike more and more, because it's often not done well. In this book there isn't even the courtesy of the narrator's name to indicate whose POV you're reading. It doesn't take long to figure that out, but it is annoying.

My recommendation is to find another book that doesn't rely on worn out tropes and isn't littered with errors.

Finding Somebody to Love

Forgotten Bodyguard involves a senator's daughter, Chloe, who's in the midst of her dad running for President of the United States of America and Ian, a tattooed, smoking hot guy, who has lived his life in foster care with his brother Jake. Ian has a long wrap sheet of criminal activity from his youth and can't seem to shake the persona. Jake gives him a job in his security detail and that is where Ian first meets Senator Moore. He saves him from being shot at an open concert. This puts Ian high on Senator Moore's list of people to guard Chloe. The only problem is Chloe is a twenty-one year old UCLA student that doesn't want a baby sitter but she sure wants Ian!

Throughout the story we learn a lot about what makes up the two characters. Chloe lost her mother when she was young and because of her dad's political career, he had very limited time for her. He was one of those dads that gave gifts to show love instead of actions. Ian, although he looks tough on the outside, is very much a man looking for a woman to love him. He had a girlfriend once, but she died in his arms from an overdose, which apparently, he helped her get hooked on drugs. The two go through some rough times of testing each other, but in the end fall in love. This story has the wonderful style of Ali Parker of love with a little drama on the side. Another wonderful read and would recommend!

Great beginning...

To a new series of books. (Not a cliffhanger. ) Very well written and fast paced. The story had just enough action to add some excitement to the romance. The main characters were well developed, and fit their rolls in the story. Definitely recommend this book!

About the Author
Wayne Douglas Barlowe is the John James Audubon of otherworld creatures. He attended the Art Students League and Cooper Union, and apprenticed in the exhibition department at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. His illustrations have been seen on myriad paperback books, and appear in Tomorrow and Beyond. He is also the author of the Hugo-award-nominated Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials, now with over 267,000 copies in print.

Cool book

This is a cool book, even if it's getting old. It would be good for a roleplaying game supplement, or ideas for some form of creative media. I also bought it because it's cool.

This book is way cool!

This was one of my favorite books when I was a kid just starting out to read Science Fiction. It's sort of like one of those "real" nature books with drawings, habitats, and biological information, but it's all about aliens from major Science Fiction authors. You figure the authors of this book have got to have a lot of information to put something like this together. For those of a puerile nature (or those who read a lot of Niven's rishartha), they even have some alien species' mating habits. In the middle there is a scale diagram of all of the aliens' sizes which was my first exposure to the wonderful world of the metric system. Buy it, read it, in will enrich your Science Fiction library

Very good, but seems to contain some errors

I do want to say starting off that (1) I got this because, being a Sci-Fi fan into artsy books, this was a hole in my collection; (2) I have been a fan of Barlowe's art since I found a used-but-impeccable copy of EXPEDITION a few years back; and (3) overall, this book did not dissapoint.
The book seems (at least on the surface) to be a well-researched compendium of aliens renedered in paint fit to augment the fertile imaginations of readers everywhere. The aliens are mainly from books and short stories that I'm not familiar with (not surprising since this was published originally when I was aproximately 5 years old), but there is enough info about them included to make it not just pictures of things I don't know what they are.
I personally felt that the best part was the sketchbook drawings in the back. I would adore to see the Thype project finally completed. And I think that some of the sketches of the aliens are superior to the finished paintings, an opinion that I realize many readers may not share.
But my big beef with the book is based on the Guild Steersman. If you read the Dune books with any care you can figure out that steersmen are mutated humans. They are not at all in this book like they are portrayed in the novels and some of the facts here are quite wrong. That the steersmen are not aliens of an unknown planet but humans who are mutated by spice overexposure is used as a plot point in one of the Dune prequels and the fact is presumably taken either from Herbert's notes or the inferences from the original novels.
Now this in itself would not usually lead me to give a book a mediocre review. It does worry me, however, that one of the other races in this book was in a story I was reading at the time (I think it was one of the Poul Anderson stories, neither book is close at hand as I write this) seemed to have a few minor oddnesses with it as well. It makes me wonder if some of the other aliens don't have the same kind of factual problems between what is in this volume and what they're like in the original story in a way that's not simply a difference of imagination.
Bottom line: get it for the art and the glosses of the alien races, but don't be that surprised if the description or portrait of your favorite alien doesn't quite match what you've seen in your head all these years.

About the Author
Jennifer Westwood was born in 1940 and studied English language at Oxford, followed by mediaeval Icelandic at Cambridge. A member of the Folklore Society, she has served as Editor of FLS Books and also the journal Folklore. Her books include Albion: A Guide to Legendary Britain (1985), Gothick Cornwall (1992), Lost Atlantis (1997) and On Pilgrimage (2003). She belongs to the Henry Doubleday Research Association, the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and the Society of Authors. She lives in rural Norfolk. Dr Jacqueline Simpson was born in 1930, and studied English Literature and Medieval Icelandic at Bedford College, London University. She has been an active member of the Folklore Society since the 1960s, having served at various times as Editor, Secretary, and President. Her books include Icelandic Folktales and Legends (1971, 2004), The Folklore of the Welsh Border (1976, 2004), British Dragons (1980, 2000), and, jointly with Steve Roud, A Dictionary of English Folklore (2000). She lives in West Sussex.

MAGNIFICENT book!

MAGNIFICENT book! My wife and I picked this up in a second-hand shop on our three week exploration of Wales and England. In England it became our primary guide book for all things unusual and preternatural. I just ordered The Lore of Scotland and eagerly anticipate reading it. These women (Jennifer Westwood and Jacqueline Simpson) are OUTSTANDING scholars on the subject and I hope some intelligent publisher wanting to make "wheel-barrels loads full of money" will commission them to do similar books on WALES and IRELAND!!

Absolutely gorgeous!

I bought it for me, because I saw that it was talking about the Guisborough raven. I've never had a more fascinated book. What a research! It tells you of all the interesting spots in Great Britain, related to haunted houses, legends, myths, ghosts, hidden treasure etc., with photos and detailed descriptions. And, what I found even cooler, it also gives you maps with all these sport on them. The information is very well organized and easy to find, the paper is nice, and the cover is pleasantly inspiring ;-)
Since I've bought it, this book has become my favorite present idea to the very best and dear people.
Strongly recommend to anyone!
