Great book what can really help you

I really liked this book it is very complete with chapters about sizing your machines, discussing virtualization, JVM tuning ( hotspot and JRocket), SOA Suite tuning, the soa infra database, adapters plus design guidelines for your composites. This book has all the answers/checks to identify your problem or build a great SOA Suite solution.
this book of Matt and Nicholas is an impressive achievement and I think they did a lot of research to find the right tuning parameters.

Personally I would change the chapters and help the administrator or developer in the process from nothing to performant SOA Suite server or from a performance problem to a solution. ( the most likely problem first and then to the less likely ).
For me was the JVM tuning was too much, especially JRocket this is replaced a time ago by Java 7 SE suite ( I think you are licensed to use this ), For JVM tuning I just look to the GC when this is once in the 5 minutes I am satisfied and move on to the server, database and BPEL invoker plus dispatchers threads.

I found it a bit strange that they keep on changing the domain scripts for JVM tuning and after a many pages, there is a same paragraph that say you should do it in the WebLogic console and start the managed servers with a NodeManager. Probably this is the most easy way for a cookbook and not having to explain NodeManagers etc. But this is bad practice because every server will have the same memory parameters even the WebLogic Admin server, with clusters you have to change this on every machine plus patching can undo your changes. The JMS bridge part was a bit strange for me, I would only use a bridge with a old WebLogic container or with for example with JBoss and maybe use a Foreign JMS server instead but for other situations I always use SAF, it is the best, very reliable ( the best ) but indeed harder to configure.
What I missed was a chapter about a server Lan and WebLogic channels, the position of the AdminServer on which machine or the combination with OSB and overloading the BPEL engine cause of a async heavy load, I see this at many customer that after some hours of heavy load everything fails ( invoker continues) and which leads to many ( recoverable) entries in the error hospital or many nights of BPEL autorecovery. Too many invoker threads floods the SOA Suite BPEL engine and the only way what works is doing more in memory (BPEL ), less in database and for example add a parameter on the JMS adapter which reads a message every x seconds.

but I know I will use and recommend this book to my customers and off course will try out these tuning parameters.

Interesting read with a lot of good suggestions

I liked this book. I have learned some new things I can use at customers. This book also does not repeat the manuals and other books much which also makes it interesting. It is the first book I have seen with focus completely on performance and tuning of Oracle SOA Suite 11g. Not only does the book contain the usual performance tips and several new ones but it also provides some suggestions for tuning in a virtualized environment (including a suggestion on how to measure cloud performance) and hardware.

I am no fan of the recipe format and would have grouped some things differently to describe a more bottom up or top down approach to tuning a SOA Suite installation. Especially JVM tuning gets a lot of attention. It is clear the authors know what they write about. Also the writing style makes this book an easy and enjoyable read. I did not get bored.

I missed a bit tuning of the OSB. Maybe some BPEL programming practices or patterns which help improving performance. What I also missed was tuning from a high level down to a single BPEL process; how to bridge the gap from JVM measures to BPEL process instances. There is not much focus on dehydration store maintenance which can also be an important factor in improving performance. Clustering issues are barely touched.

On the whole this was an interesting read with a lot of useful suggestions.

Good book with interesting recipes

This book covers almost all aspects of the performance tuning starting from the weblogic server to different SOA components. The highlight being detailed steps on different options available to analyze and troubleshoot the issues.
The modularization of the book is really good. The book starts with the soa infrastructure, listing the different options of monitoring the JVM's, SOA suite and different components like bpel, rules, mediator which are actually really good. BPEL and BPMN tuning tips are already available as part of the performance guides/blogs ,but the authors have captured that as well in this book, which is good in one way so as it helps to bring all the performance tuning options together. Monitoring SOA suite, JVM Garbage collections, Platform tuning are very well covered in the book. It was good to learn we could leverage multiple available options mentioned in the book to monitor/troubleshoot different JVM/server issues.

The book also covers the tuning aspects from process perspective as well as at environment level with equal importance. I recommend this book as a must read for SOA server Administrators as well as SOA Consultants, this book will help you to get most out of the SOA infrastructure. The book will make an interesting read for those people who love to take it the next level.

Willow Springs is a sparsely populated sea island just off America's southeastern coast whose small black community is dominated by the elderly matriarch, Miranda "Mama" Day. When Mama Day's greatniece, Cocoa, marries, she returns to Willow Springs with her husband for an extended visit. Once there, strange forcesboth natural and supernaturalwork to separate the couple. After visiting the menacing Ruby, a local root doctor, Cocoa becomes dangerously ill, and the struggle for her life showcases Naylor's talent for descriptive prose. Though the novel as a whole fairly breathes with life, it is marred by the unintentionally comic death of a major character, who is attacked by a vicious chicken. This farm boy was not convinced. Gloria Naylor's fictional island, Willow Springs, is home to a few black families who have lived there since time of Sapphira Wade, a "true conjure woman" who could "walk through a lightning storm without being touched" and who, as legend has it, may or may not have murdered the white landowner who was first her owner and then her husband and/or lover. Located between Georgia and South Carolina but a part of neither, Willow Springs is a place that resembles and yet makes strange the rest of the world. Like women anywhere, women from Willow Springs worry about not having children and are jealous of their spouses - but here they use secret rituals to become pregnant and cast spells over rivals. Here Ophelia Day (nicknamed Cocoa) returns every August from New York City, eventually bringing her new, native northeastern husband George; here, a hurricane, evil spells, jealousy, and tragedy combine to teach her about the power of love and family. Here also is Mama Day, Sapphira's great-granddaughter and Cocoa's great-aunt, who has powers that the sophisticated Cocoa only senses and the practical George recognizes much too late. About the Author
Joan L. Slonczewski received her BA from Bryn Mawr College and her PhD in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University, where she studied bacterial motility with Robert M. Macnab. After postdoctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania, she has since taught undergraduate microbiology in the Department of Biology at Kenyon College, where she earned a Silver Medal in the National Professor of the Year program of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. She has published numerous research articles with undergraduate coauthors on bacterial pH regulation and has published six science fiction novels, including A Door into Ocean and The Highest Frontier, both of which earned the John W. Campbell Memorial Award. She served as At-Large Member representing Divisions on the Council Policy Committee of the American Society for Microbiology and as a member of the editorial board of the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology.

John W. Foster received his BS from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (now the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia) and his PhD from Hahnemann University (now Drexel University School of Medicine), also in Philadelphia, where he worked with Albert G. Moat. After postdoctoral work at Georgetown University, he joined the Marshall University School of Medicine in West Virginia. He is currently teaching in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine in Mobile, Alabama. Dr. Foster has coauthored three editions of the textbook Microbial Physiology and has published more than 100 journal articles describing the physiology and genetics of microbial stress responses. He has served as Chair of the Microbial Physiology and Metabolism division of the American Society for Microbiology and as a member of the editorial advisory board of the journal Molecular Microbiology.

Some of the pages in the book are unreadable and all look like a jumbled mess of symbols and letters. I am very upset because I need all the information in this book for my midterm and didn't pay $60 for a book that has entire pages containing important information that are messed up. This needs to be fixed.

Review of Bukeley's 'Wondering Brain'

This work serves effectively as an introduction to neuroscience of atypical activities like dreaming, sexuality, creativity and meditation. These experiences are all link by a religious studies perspective. The book contains an introduction to both computational neuroscience and religious studies, making it incredibly accessible. The author also introduces many of the key modern thinkers in both fields; both Damasio the neuroscientist and Doniger the religious scholar receive several long passages of admirable quotation. Steven Pinker, Freud, and others are also introduced.

This work is not highly organized or easy to use for research purposes. It is a series of essays best suited to leisurely reading. This is a layman's introduction.

About the Author
Tracy D. Terrell (late) received his Ph.D. in Spanish Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin and published extensively in the area of Spanish dialectology. Professor Terrell’s publications on second-language acquisition are widely known in the United States and abroad.

Magdalena Andrade Received her first B.A. in Spanish/French and a second B.A. in English from San Diego University. After teaching in the Calexico Unified School District Bilingual Program for several years, she taught elementary and intermediate Spanish at both San Diego State and the University of California, Irvine, where she also taught Spanish for Heritage Speakers and Humanities Core Courses. Upon receiving her Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine, she continued to teach there for several years and also at California State University, Long Beach. Currently an instructor at Irvine Valley College, Professor Andrade has co-authored Mundos de fantasía: Fábulas, cuentos de hadas y leyendas and Cocina y comidas hispanas (McGraw-Hill).

Jeanne Egasse Received her B.A. and M.A. in Spanish linguistics from the University of California, Irvine. She has taught foreign language methodology courses and supervised foreign language and ESL teachers in training for the Department of Education at the University of California, Irvine. Currently, she is an instructor of Spanish and coordinates the Spanish language Program at Irvine Valley College. In addition, Professor Egasse serves as a consultant for local schools and universities on implementing Natural aApproach in the language classroom. Elías Miguel Muñoz is a Cuban American poet and prose writer. He has a Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of California, Irvine, and he has taught language and literature at the university level. Dr. Muñoz is the author of Viajes fantásticos, Ladrón de la mente, and Isla de luz, titles in the Storyteller's Series by McGraw-Hill. He has published five other novels, two books of literary criticsm, and two poetry collections. His creative work has been featured in numerous anthologies and sourcebooks, including Herencia: The Anthology of Hispanic Literature of the United States, The Encyclopedia of American Literature, and The Scribner Writers Series:Latino and Latina Writers.

Best text on the market for Spanish Instruction

I teach college Spanish and I love this text. It is thoughtfully constructed and provides numerous activities for communication in the target language. Dos mundos also provides very useful ideas for instructors. The pages are colorful and the content engaging. My students love all the activities I use from this text. I wish more Spanish instructors would embrace the methodology presented in Dos mundos. My level one Spanish students actually speak Spanish (albeit low-level Spanish). I don't know if I would recommend this text for independent study, however. I believe it would be most effective if used in conjunction with a dynamic instructor. I do agree that the authors should include a separate English-Spanish dictionary section. I also find the video segments to be very poor (and why are they exactly the same as the ones for Puntos de partida when they both have such different approaches to language acquisition?)

I've been using Dos Mundos in my Spanish III class this fall and it's been a quite positive experience. I'm a former English teacher, and a long time psychologist, so I have some feel for the teaching/learning dynamic of a text. I'm finding DM to be intelligently written and organized, with many different kinds of activities that build on and integrate what you're learning. I like the way history, art, pop culture, geography, politics, music, literature, etc. are interspersed throughout DM. There's cartoons, color, and a reasonably unstilted, good-hearted consciousness in the book. For those of us used to American textbooks which have been reduced to squirmy blandness by pressure groups leaning on state textbook purchasing agencies, it's a bit refreshing to encounter occasional perspectives on economic and political injustice, environmental exploitation, etc. Not that this is a particularly political book, it's just that these things are usually soooooo sanitized. Some people have complained about the lack of an English to Spanish dictionary in this book. Face it---you need to buy a little dictionary to have when you're reading DM and learning Spanish. No added-on dictionary section is going to be complete enough to meet your needs. You'll only be wasting time using it, since half the time the word you're looking for won't be there anyway. You might as well go to the dictionary in the first place. To sum it up: I like this book and I'm in the process of reading the seven chapters which were previously covered in Spanish I and II, which I didn't take in this sequence.

this is not a bad spanish book. i don't know if i would say it is great. lots of group activities that are helpful, but they are pretty simple and repetitive. they need to be a little more thoughtful and put in lots of DIFFERENT activities. one last, quite frustrating thing, there is only a spanish-english dictionary in the back. extremely irritating because this is a spanish 1-2 book, and anytime you want to look up a word, you'll need to consult another dictionary.

Great Sequel

I really enjoyed this sequel, and was so happy to see that it had come out. I enjoyed the first book, and I wanted to see what happened with Keridwen and Silver, and I was not disappointed. I loved Keridwen back on Earth and how the plot twisted into a the surprise at the end. It was well crafted and a great read. The character's were just as bit detailed and compelling as in the first book, and maybe ever more so. I also loved how their relationship kept growing and evolving along the way. There was a great epilogue too, and I hope that's a clue that there might be another book? I'd love to see what else the future holds for Keridwen and Silver.

Sci-Fy Romance by The amazing Stardawn Cabot

This is the second book in The Sangrian Tiger's Tale by Stardawn Cabot. The is Sci-Fi, Time Travel, Fantsy, Ageplay, F/F romance and love. Meriden and Silver are back in Earth's world after leaving Sangria through a mirror and Magic. Keridwen becomes a short ten year old as they explore the city. There are some mild spanking's and any sexual play only happens when Keridwen is an adult. They are on a quest and the story is full of twists and turns and well developed and they learn more about each other. This was a terrific read. I do recommend that you read the first book, The General's Guardian first in order to understand more of what's going on.

This is the next book in the series. I do recommend that you read the first book in the series. You will be lost if you don’t. Anyways, we continue the relationship between Keridwen and Silver. They are transported to Earth and are sent on a quest. There lots of twists and turns, but it is very engaging and I was hooked from the first words. I think that you will enjoy this book and I give it 4 stars.

Tips for staying motivated!

This book is all about motivation, what it is, and what drives it. It starts out with a brief explanation of reasons why people are unmotivated and reasons why you shouldn’t succumb to those reasons.

There is then a chapter on how to determine what your excuses for procrastination are.

My favorite part of the book is the section that lists things that can help you become more motivated. This includes music, looking your best, and even spirituality.

There is also information on setting goals, holding yourself accountable for reaching those goals, and also suggestions on how to reach those goals, whatever they may be.

I would recommend this book for people that often lack motivation and would like to do something about that. It would also be great for people that want to make sure that their motivation stays high, so they are able to accomplish their future goals.

The author goes over subjects like the causes for lacking in motivation, problems with procrastination, little things in life that can be your motivation, ensuring you are open to change and how consistent goal setting can aid you in maintaining your motivation without burnout. Good way to find that little boost you may be looking for.

I am sure many of us have had those days where you just can't seem to start anything. You have an idea but don't know how to act on it and it can really drive you mad. Sometimes you blame yourself or others around for you for lack of motivation, when really you just need a jump start. There is a lot of advice out there, but people get themselves to fast and then they run out steam way to quickly. Slow and steady wins the race!
