Better at jokes, than explaining them

This is yet another sterile, wandering attempt to make observations and draw conclusions about types of jokes. The difference here is that very many of the jokes are quite amusing, and many are not widely circulated. ("We ate the last cannibal, yesterday.") I.e., it's a good book to learn some jokes for parties. One chapter, unfortunately, on Auschwitz, is grossly offensive. I'd recommend skipping it, as soon as you confirm this for yourself.

"Omit needless words," intone Strunk and White in The Elements of Style; "use definite, specific, concrete language." In order to use the best word for the job, though, you have to know it. The Flip Dictionary is full of words you may have forgotten and words you never knew, all accessed by their meaning. Look up "mounds and hills, with," and you will find tumulus. Search "the ropes connecting the harness and the canopy of a parachute," and you'll find shrouds. There's no need to say "lowest point in orbit" when you can say perigee, or "lowest deck of a ship" when you can say orlop. We don't know when we'd ever find a chance to use the word tomally, but we like knowing the one word out there that means "lobster liver." And, oh, the lists! Of apples and art movements, beers and birding terms, constellations and clothes (including 47 kinds of shirt), fears and ferns. The same caveats apply as with the use of a thesaurus: some of the definitions are a bit off ("hater" is vague for misanthrope), others are rather informal (boner, for instance, to mean "error"), and still others are so specific that you will want to be sure that you truly have found the right word for the job. 30% of this book is extremely useful--the rest, useless

As a fiction writer, I use this book often for two extremely helpful aspects:
1) The lists of different names for colors, kinds of fabrics, etc.
2) The thesauras-type entries contain some words that only particially mean the same thing. This in-exactness means that you find words that are closely related to the word you originally looked up; you receive a more comprehensive list of suggestions. (This feature is great for people who already know the exact definitions of words. Otherwise, I suggest a companion dictionary.)
The "flip dictionary" aspects of the book are useless. First, if you don't think the same way the author does, you might not be able to find the reverse entry at all. There are many different ways to word a definition. Second, what good are words that most likely your readers won't know? Take these entries for instance: "pivoting, capable of: trochoid;" and "larval form of certain bivalve mollusks: spat." Trochoid? Spat? In a short story about underwater exploration, if I must mention those things in that way, I'll stick to "able to pivot" and "clam larva." My readers will undoubtedly thank me for it.
I'd have to own a Roget's Super Thesaurus to be sure, but I highly suspect that it's a much better resource for writers.

Do we really need this?

This Flip Dictionary isn't something really new. And in some of the areas it covers, there are serious errors.
It's probably unfair to ask one author, working by herself, to give us a book on the quality of, say, Roget's International Thesaurus a volume of over 1300 pages published by Thomas Y. Crowell and prepared by a large professional team building up on 150 years of scholarship and research.
However, life isn't always "fair." When I write, I want to know that the information is comprehensive and reliable. I think Kipfer's book is a brave attempt and the design is contemporary and engaging. For my writing, I think I'll stick with time-proven Roget

A travel journal and ride report written beautifully

I am not quite finished but I have been taking my time with this expansive real-life adventure. While this is, in many ways, a travel journal and ride report, the books is written beautifully. And the level of detail? How could he remember such detail of this travel tapestry. I guess when you really can't go very fast in many places, you spend a lot of time taking photos and notes. On the other hand, some people have amazing memories for details (and there may also be some creative licensing). I still have a lot to go but I am still completely living vicariously. Every time I get onto my touring bike I feel like there's a 10% chance I might start riding and never turn back (that's why I don't carry my passport or too much money with me). Superb.

One of the best books I've ever read.
What a great writer Mr. Simon is!
This book is much more about the people he meets, the government bureaucracies, scenery he sees, hotels he stays in,roads he survives and problems and challenges he has along the way as well as his rambling thoughts than it is about the motorcycle. But he does describe the challenges of motorcycling in remote places such as packing tools and spare parts along with clothing and camping gear, frequent falls from the bike, having to buy gasoline from other vehicles when he doesn't have enough, and the various repairs and overhauls that are needed.

Disappointing

I used books written by Mike Meyers to pass A+ and Net+ exams, both of which were written very well, contained minimal errors, and provided comprehensive coverage without unnecessary repetition. I have to say, this book left something to be desired. First of all, Mike Meyers is not the author as the title might suggest, he is the editor (and a poor one at that). This book, which was written by two other authors, was haphazardly put together with apparently little collaboration. This becomes apparent as the reader progresses through the book, as a number of topics are inadequately covered with very little detail, often repetitively. Readers will feel a sense of deja vu several times throughout the book, thinking "hasn't this been covered already, and this new explanation is equally vague." I am recently CCNA - Security certified; I can say based off of that training that some of the assertions in this book are either inaccurate or do not tell the entire story. Furthermore, the knowledge that readers will acquire from this book is more theoretical than practical, which may be more of a critique on the Security+ objectives themselves rather than any neglect of authorship in this regard.

The book contradicts itself and contains a number of obvious grammatical and pedagogical errors. For example, on page 351 the authors write "most computer viruses self-replicate without the knowledge of the computer user." Yet on page 356, the authors assert that a worm self-replicates, writing "Compare this to viruses, which cannot self-replicate." This is not an anomaly within the book, but an example of one of many frustrating mistakes that are confusing to the reader. I was disappointed in this book, which I had bought because I was familiar with and loved the editor's previous books.

That being said, this book may give you what you need to pass the exam if you can move past annoying errors and repetition, and particularly if you also already have experience or related training. Without that, I'm not sure this would be enough to pass the exam, but I have yet to take it. There may be a better source that would more effectively give you everything you need. If I had it to do over again, I would buy another book if one was available for a similar price.

I passed my exam on Aug 9th. This is a very easy ready book that helped me a lot passing Security+. I really like the size and feel unlike Conklin that is hard cover. You can skim some topics if you feel comfortable. In my case I spent more time on protocols and cryptography and network security topics.
I highly recommend using Security+ study topics (from CompTIA site) as a guide when reading this book though some topics might be duplicated (repetition does not hurt). In addition to this book, I spent some great time on Youtube for topics that were a little tough.
This book is written to understand the subject not just to pass the test. I will keep this book for future reference.
Since this book is called ‘Security+ SY0-401’, it should follow the Security+ objective topics. Topics are scatted all over the book and Index is not that great, so have a copy of the exam’s objective and make notes on it.
It took me only 3weeks to pass Security+ after Network+ using same Author AND no other expensive practice test and I’m a newbie in IT (Just college experience).

Good for review, but don't rely solely on this book.

I like it, but don't rely ONLY on this for the test.
I read the entire David L. Prowse SYO-301 book, did all those practice tests and exercises. Then, I skimmed through most of this book and read up on chapters that were challenging for me to digest (mostly PKI, encryption and authentication server topics) to reinforce my learning.
If you know every sentence of every page of this book, you'll pass the test. However, I would also recommend getting your hands on other materials and trying to APPLY your knowledge before taking the exam. Not one thing is the be-all, end-all answer key to passing Sec+.
During the Sec+ studies, I also read the entire Mike Meyers A+ book; an entire college book (800 pages) for Network+; ProProf's online notes; Professor Messer videos on Youtube; AND the COMPTIA Certmaster program for Sec+ V.301.

I wanted to know the material inside and out. Not just "know the answers", but understand WHY things are the way they are. I passed A+ and Sec+ within a week of each other. Sec+ was the more challenging one.

A Rollicking Adventure Yarn

Have you ever played a game where you choose which super power you'd like to possess? Have you ever imagined what it might be like to fly at the speed of sound, walk through walls, lift up cars, or create electricity with your bare hands? What would you do if you woke up one morning and were actually able to do one or more of those things? And what would you do if you had always had those powers and woke up one morning without them?

That's kind of what happens to the kids of Noble's Green, Pennsylvania, the self-proclaimed "Safest Town on Earth." Part of why Noble's Green is so famously safe is that all of its residents under the age of 13 have one or more super powers. Some are terrifically strong or fast, several can fly, others can disappear, and still others have superhuman senses. When a house starts on fire or a car drives off a bridge, the kids are on the scene, ready to save the day however they can.

Having super powers is a blast: flying is a total thrill, and the games of hide-and-seek are taken to a whole new level. So it's especially sad that, on the night of each young superhero's 13th birthday, his or her powers --- and memories of ever having them --- are sucked away forever. Why do the kids of Noble's Green have these powers? And why do they disappear faster than a speeding bullet? These are mysteries that are beyond even the powers of the super kids.

Help comes from the unexpected source of decidedly un-super Daniel Corrigan. Daniel and his family move to Noble's Green to be with his grandmother while she's dying from cancer. It takes Daniel a few days to realize that there's something a bit odd about his new classmates and neighbors, but when he learns their secret and hears about the mysterious disappearance of their special skills, he thinks that he might be able to help. A whole bunch of children, including superhero extraordinaire and leader of the pack Eric, are about to turn 13, leaving the town open not only to the tyranny of super-powered bullies but also to a host of natural and man-made disasters.

Since his father is a fan of Sherlock Holmes, Daniel knows how to use his powers of deduction and observation to solve problems. Combined with his super friends' unique powers, can Daniel uncover the mystery of the menacing Shroud who sucks away super powers?

This is Matthew Cody's first novel, and it marks the debut of an appealing new talent. With its fast-paced action, rapidly shifting plot, and focus on superheroes and detectives, the book will appeal to both girls and boys, and is a great choice for comic book fans who claim they don't like novels. Although there are moments of humor and plenty of suspense throughout, POWERLESS --- like many of the best comic books themselves --- also contains dark undertones that might get children thinking about making friends, growing up and taking responsibility. But most of all, it is a rollicking adventure yarn that will have kids longing for super powers of their own.

Great from Start to Finish

I picked up this book because I had seen some raves about it on [...]. So my expectations were high. Did "Powerless" let me down? NOT AT ALL. So much fun, so clever. And I am not a comic book person but this book was so truly entertaining, it didn't matter. I am planning to read it a second time this weekend--something I almost never do.

I hope this author keeps churning them out. Can't wait for his next book.

Daniel can't help noticing some of the kids in his new town are a little... unusual. The girl across the street sometimes moves faster than he can see. The school bully can throw kids twelve feet in the air. And his classmate, Eric, always seems to know where there's trouble.

After a near fatal fall, Daniel's friends let him in on their secret - they have superpowers. It's been happening in the town for generations, a fact carefully kept secret thanks to a series of rules, including the one that none of them likes to think about: it ends at thirteen. When the superkids reach their thirteenth birthdays, the next morning they have lost their powers, and forgotten they ever had them.

Daniel can't help but feel something isn't right about this. But his investigations into the mystery of the superpowers will put both him and his friends in danger, and uncover a history he never could have imagined.

POWERLESS is a fun, fast-paced read, with a courageous and likable main character in Daniel. It's refreshing to read a story in which the protagonist isn't the super-special one, and Daniel proves that you don't need superpowers to be a hero. The supporting characters are quirky, but have depth as well, and the villain is effectively creepy. The twists along the way will keep readers guessing right up until the end. The end itself is satisfying, but leaves a few questions unanswered.

This reviewer hopes there is a sequel in Daniel's future! Highly recommended.

I quit drinking 5 months ago and resolved to learn as much as possible about addiction and the recovery industry. This book is, by far, the best account I've read of the brain's neurochemical reactions to alcohol, and how they drive behavior. It's totally devoid of the moral platitudes and "spiritual" assertions found in other literature; it's short, concise and easy to understand; and, most important, it's really helpful to the recovering addict (or anyway it was to me.) Without giving too much away, the book gives an evidence-based description of the "mechanism" of alcohol addiction involving the different regions of the brain and the neurotransmitters with which they communicate. Norepinephrine, the hormone/neurotransmitter involved in stress-responses, figures largely.

Porter's clear, nonjudgmental explanation gave me helpful tools to apply to my own recovery. I immediately understood the importance of stress-management and placed it at the center of my life. I came to think of alcohol addiction as a health problem, where any solution for stress is equally a solution for withdrawals and craving-- more exercise, better diet, taking care of bills and relationships, effective relaxation, etc. I could be proactive and make good health choices that took the sting off the cravings before they hit, all the while creating a higher standard of health that became a reason in itself for continued sobriety. Five months in, I still apply these principles.

Surprisingly, very little else I read concerned itself with neurobiology. I can't speak for others, but to me the reduction of addiction to physiological processes in the brain did a lot to dispel the horror of recovery. It's hard to be frightened of a beast when at last you understand it. Porter's explanation is evidence-based, logical, and accessible, using the best information out there. I would recommend it to anyone.

This book really makes sense. It takes a long time of drinking to become an alcoholic. It is not a disease. It is a learned habit to deal with all kinds of emotions and stress. It is a choice that can be stopped.

This book answered for me some questions I I could not answer for myself or explain to my close ones:
Why, having everything in life to be happy, and everything to lose, am I still drinking, even after a serious diagnosis?
Why, having quit once and truly forgetting about it, then restarting briefly, quitting the second time doesn't work so well?
Why is the professional advice to gradually cut down to one unit a day wrong?
Why is there no such thing as just one drink, or just one night, and then I'll stop?
Why does AA not work for me (or many others)?
I want to thank this author for doing all the hard work and research to produce this most intelligent, easy-to-understand, and most of all, HELPFUL book. There are no "10 steps" or "Easy way" to anything, especially not this. But it is worth doing, if you want your life back.

The best bible study...period !

I have gone through this study yearly for the last 8 years and each time I have gained new insights into God's direction for my life. The greatest thing about this study is that I see in my answers to the questions year to year a clear evidence of God's faithfulness to me and His awesome love. I give this study away often as God leads...as a gift, and God gifts me...by increasing my faith as I see Him use this study in other's lives.

Fantastic book

I adore this book. It is the book in an ongoing study at my church. I'm not a brand new Christian, but I'm by no means a "seasoned pro". This book is so perfect. It very throughly, yet succinctly, covers the basics. Don't take that to mean it's a primer, per se. The "old timers" in the study I took really REALLY appreciated the author's insights and ability to explain things. This book is essential for those who are new believers, but it would definitely benefit those who've been around the block AND those on the fence, or those who just want to know what Christians are all about. No matter what, I knew within the first 2 chapters that I'd refer to this book in particular over and over again. I'm so grateful to Will Wyatt for this book describing God's unconditional and everlasting love, and I'm ordering it for my mom, a new believer. Praise God!

This is a study on Christian Basics, but basics so profound and foundational to a daily, effective, meaningful relationship with Christ that I will be able to study it year after year and still be changed by it's direction in the scriptures.
