Dr. Baker holds a PhD in analytical chemistry from the University of Nebraska.

I am the one who new for CE, and I find that this book is very easy to read. It provides basic principle about CE , modes of CE, instrumentation, how to develope a method, and applications. There are many figures that make you easy to understand the priciple of separation in CE that other books don't have. This book is suitable to be the first CE book for you if you are new in this field.

Moving and emotional HQ comic

This was a very good HQ comic. Good Story, good characters and good art work, made this a very enjoyable manga.

Both the hero, Theo and the heroine, Lily are very likeable characters that I easily cared about. Theo's children are adorable and add a good substance to the story.

The development of the hero and heroine's relationship is slow and natural, and the mangaka, Masami Hoshino easily gets the emotions across to the reader. The art work in general is very good from the faces to the details in both the inside and outside scenery.

The one problem I had with this comic and why I couldn't give it a higher rating, is the dark and emotional issues one of the main characters has to deal with, aren't even brought up until the last few pages. I know this is because it's a manga and they can only get so much of the original story into one, but it would have been so much more satisfying if the manga was longer or broken up into two volumes.

What was that?

I read this book in spite of the negative reviews. Why? It was the last book in the Harlequin Innocent Wives bundle. This was the only book in that set that had negative reviews. I figured I ought to read it before I got started on the "good ones" so I can end on a positive note. Honestly, it was like reading a chronology of events. If Harlequin asked me to write a romance novel (I am not a writer of course), this whole book would have been my first chapter. The lack of action, romance, plot etc. was just beyond belief. There was NOTHING going on. And yes, the marriage proposal came out of the clear blue sky. I have no idea what I just read since I skipped so much it on account of the lack of ... well ... everything! I looked up this authors other works and there are less than 5 of them only 1 going beyond 2 stars. I think this novel was just a filler for the bundle I bought. At any rate, I haven't read the others in the bundle yet and the other 3 have great reviews. I still came out ahead because I only counted the other 3 with the price. It was $8+ for a bundle of 4 but if you enjoy the 3 out of 4 you still end up spending less than $3 per book. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK on its own & do not waste your time!

Where's the romance???

This book had no romance in it. It went on and on about the nanny watching the children of a widow. She was emotionally broken, and he was shut down from grief. The ending was dumb. After she told him how broken she was, he said will you marry me right out of left field. Where the crap did that come from? There had been no kissing, no talk of any kind between them regarding anything intimate. He wouldn't even tell her he wanted her to stay as the nanny when her time to leave was coming up. The only thoughts were kept in their own heads thru the entire book. Way too 'English' of a book with too many words and sayings that left me wondering what is the writer even talking about?? Do I need to be raised in England to read this book? Yes!

Vince Luca, 17, has a problem. His wealthy family runs the, uh, vending machine business in New York, and Vince is determined not to be part of it. Especially after a hot date is ruined when he finds that his older brother Tommy has conducted some business with Jimmy the Rat and hidden the messy and temporarily unconscious body in the trunk of Vince's car. His dad, the King of the Mob, is reasonable, sensible, lots of fun, gives great presents to his kids--and his name strikes the hearts of other mobsters to stone.

Although Vince keeps a low profile at school, his family connection brings him unwanted advantages, like the birthday Porsche that gets him arrested on stolen vehicle charges, or the football game in which he makes touchdown after touchdown because word has gotten around and nobody is willing to tackle him. Even private conversations at home have to be carried on in the basement because the FBI has bugged the house and an agent is always listening. Vince's life is inextricably tangled up with the family business, no matter how hard he tries to stay out of it. How can he show them he's serious? Then he meets Kendra, and when she innocently reveals that her father's an FBI agent--that FBI agent--it's a match made in heaven. He thinks.

The Sopranos (minus the vulgarity and violence) meets Leave It to Beaver (minus the "aw-shucks" tone and dated sensibility) in Korman's (No More Dead Dogs) brassy, comical caper. With its razor-sharp dialogue and bullet-fast pace, this tale could fly on either the small or big screen, yet it makes a page-turner of a novel. Korman shapes a believable and likable crew-despite the less than reputable profession of some. Many of the novel's conflicts revolve around the fact that the affable narrator, 17-year-old Vince Luca, refuses to become involved in the family "vending machine business." But of course, since his father is the Mob boss, and his older brother serves as their father's loser lackey, Vince cannot avoid being tainted (e.g., he lands in jail "because my sixteenth-birthday present [a Porsche] turns out to be hot"). Mom turns a deaf ear to the shady goings-on, cooking up a steady storm in the kitchen and willing "to serve a sit-down dinner for fifteen guys at four in the morning with ten minutes advance notice." Things heat up when Vince begins dating-and eventually falls in love with-the daughter of the FBI agent determined to bring down Vince's father. The boy also gets sucked into the maelstrom when he loans money to one of his father's underlings for whom he feels sorry. Funny and unexpectedly affecting, this will grab-and hold onto-even the most reluctant of readers. Ages 12-up.

Grade 7 Up-Vince Luca, 17, has always been concerned, embarrassed, and fearful about his crime-family background, though he has sworn never to become involved or to let it keep him from upstanding behavior. During his senior year, all he wants is romance, friendship, and to get through school, just like any normal guy, but things don't go as planned. His new girlfriend turns out to be the daughter of the FBI agent who is bugging his house; his older brother has figured out how to use his New Media class Web-page project for a bookmaking scheme; and he decides to save two lowlifes who owe big bucks to his father from the pains of mob revenge. The novel's quick pace and Korman's recognizable, upbeat style balance the contrived and predictable elements that infiltrate the story. Vince is a believable character; there are moments when he realizes that his name gives him power and he has to remind himself that he has chosen a different path. Susan Beth Pfeffer's Most Precious Blood (Bantam, 1991; o.p.) deals with a teenage girl whose father belongs to a crime family, but it is more serious. Readers who perceive the frightening meaning of organized-crime activity will best appreciate the tension and edgy humor that permeate this book, and will cheer when Vince finally stands up to his father.

A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE, even the NON-Readers.

Former 8th grade ELA teacher, now an Admin, this book was AMAZING and by far my favorite unit. The kids love it and I mean, all of them. It was a page turner and has a Romeo and Juliette theme which lead them into high school. Very cute and funny and the main character is a boy so this was a great hook for the non-reading male.

Good Story, Good Writing, Good Fun

Just like any other seventeen-year-old, Vince Luca has problems. His best friend Alex can't get a date so he lives his love life vicariously through Vince. The problem is, Vince isn't doing so well in the date department either. Problem number two? Vince's older brother Tommy is a hothead and a real pain in Vince's neck. Even when he means well, Tommy tends to screw up Vince's life.

Tommy opted to drop out of high school and join their father's `vending machine business.' His father's business - that's Vince's biggest problem and it's a not-so-normal one. Anthony "Honest Abe" Luca is the president of Brothers Vending Machine - and one of the most powerful Mob bosses in New York. Vince loves his dad, but he hates what `Honest Abe' does for a living.

Even though Vince's dad respects his decision to keep out of the vending machine business, that business has a way of intruding on every aspect of Vince's life. So even though Alex keeps reminding him that, "it's my love life too," Vince doesn't think it's worth it to explain his father's life style (or to try and keep it a secret) just to take some girl out on a date.

All that changes when Vince meets Kendra Bightly. He feels a connection to Kendra that he's never felt with anyone else. There's just one tiny problem: Kendra's dad is the FBI agent in charge of the ongoing investigation into Vince's dad. Trying to date Kendra without her dad hearing about it on a wire-tap, let alone trying to keep the family business a secret from her, may be the biggest problem Vince has ever faced.

Great book for the reluctant reader

This is a great book for reluctant readers in grades 7th through 10th grade. Older high school students may enjoy it to. I used this book in my high school special education English classes. The students enjoyed it and insisted that I teach this in my future classes. The narrator is funny, the plot line is interesting, and characters are engaging. High school students can relate to the main character's difficulty with navigating problems which occur with his family, his girl friend, and best friend. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in getting their students excited about reading.

Don't buy this book because of Eisenman

Yes, Peter Eisenman is quite a fool, as the other reviewers' remarks make aptly clear. He does not measure up to Hadid or Libeskind, two architects among many others in an especially stong contemporary field who vie for 'best project' in serious international competitions. No, do not buy this book because of Eisenman -- any more than you would buy any other book because it had his name on it.
But this book was not, thank God, written by one person, which is perhaps why the other reviewers fail to notice what's so special about it. The significant essays in this book are by Jacques Derrida, and what's more they give very elegant, fine philosophical answers to difficult questions that have motivated Derrida's thought since the 60s -- but until this book came out one could only guess at the fuller technical philosophical context of Derrida's thought in, say, Of Grammatology. So skip Eisenman - as even Derrida was forced to do and end his relation with Eisenman shortly after this book came out, when he became irritated with the man's complete vacuousness and inability to comprehend anything remotely theoretical.
In short, strip it of Eisenman, discard the punch-card ballot box look (apparently the publisher is located in Florida?), and take the Derrida. You'll be glad you did. The book merits 5 stars without the BS, but gets about 3 stars due to the cluttered context.

Can Eisenman get any dumber? You better believe it!

Quite possibly the dumbest book about architecture (or non architecture to be more precise), if not the dumbest book about anything - EVER.
Eisenman is, in the words of British Aesthetic Philoshopher, Roger Scruton, "a pretentious twit". This book, with its gimicky perforated pages, has more holes than Eisenman's logic. But, hey, if you want to seem pretentious and quasi intellectual, then maybe this might be the book for you. If you want to learn something about architecture, then try looking at the work of a real architect. But give this a wide berth. Until Eisenman produces a work of merit, he's fooling no one but himself and the few insecure "intellectuals" who don't really rate in smart society.

Simply Ridiculous

OK. So we all know that Eisenman is architecture's biggest fool, and it is easy to add to the lore of humor about this intellectually pathetic nincompoop, but if you had any doubts about how much of a con-man he really is, this book will dispel such lingering thoughts. Firstly, you have to see past the incredible arrogance of publishing a work that is perforated with holes, eliminating any effective opportunity to read the pages. Eisenman apologists (mostly gullible students, or intellectual wannabe's), will make the most infantile claims about this gimmick, citing it as 'challenging', transgressive' and all the other predictable buzzwords used to justify the rubbish that is written in the name of critical discourse today. Bear in mind too, that Jacques Derrida abandoned all communication with Eisenman when he eventually realised that Eisenman really had nothing of interest to add to contemporary theoretical debate, and admitted that this collaboration was a professional embarrassment. - In truth, the small holes may be the only worthwhile part of this otherwise ridiculous book.
