When "Forest Gump" meets "Suzie Wong" ...

THIS Thai Novel has everything I like in a Thai novel: Joy, love, crime, hope, friendship, Thailand and Thai people's beliefs and religion, and a great personal development of the main character, too.

I started to read the novel late yesterday evening and I read it in 3 hours without stopping...
And it's one of THOSE Thai novels I will read once more for sure. Because it gave me all I want from a good read: I liked the protagonist as well as the minor "players", the setting in Puhket is perfect because I love that island, and it was the first time someone wrote - something positive about Thai prisons! :)

The story starts with Steven West, 38 years old, is leaving Manchester/England for the first time in his live. Destination: Thailand, Island of Puhket. He is not the sharpest knife in the drawer and not really ugly, but somehow ... insignificant.
At first it's a bit like watching Forest Gump meeting Suzie Wong :)
After his first adventures involving bargirls, a black eye and a massage parlor, he gets himself a scooter for exploring the island. He also has gotten a certain insight about his money, Thai girls and lady drinks ...
Then he meets Pin the Flower Girl. She is selling roses in the streets - and is visibly pregnant. Her Ex, a Leeds character called Dean has a tattoo and a temper, and slowly Pin opens up to Steven and tells him her sad story. Then, on one of their excursions - after visiting the Zoo and a temple where a monk gives them both his blessings and a wristlet to Steven, Pin shows him her secret place. Where the story with Dean ended once and for all...

Steven's fate takes an ugly turn when the police comes to arrest him for the murder of Pin and her unborn child. The leading Detective on the case is a playboy called Sawat Deewat. He is only for 12 months in the police for making merit with Buddha. And, at first he has no intentions to listen to Steven's story - because it's too bizarre to believe.
So Steven will be put into the Puhket Provincial Prison, where he will have some strange encounters. But being a kind character with a jai dee - a good heart - he will find friends and supporters. And the truth will come out and Steven will find his real vocation...

Having read The Thai Dragon, The Kiss of the Dragon, and Cocktails & Dreams, this is an entirely different kind of story.
And I liked it because who knows Thailand and the Thai a bit, also knows something about their beliefs in Phii - ghosts. The foreigner will laugh and say - what a superstitious kinda folks. I say - lucky they are, with an imagination so colourful we farangs can't even imagine in our dreams ...

A DAMNED GOOD READ.

I have just finished reading The Flower Girl and absolutely loved it. I have read all of Guys novels and love his style and how he develops his story lines. I think he is probably the premier mystery and thriller author out of the U.K. today. Guy's stories of the mysteries of the East are enthralling and loaded with first hand knowledge of the people, customs, the very essence of the Land of Smiles.
I try to leave comments on Kindle UK from here in the US but there is a spanner thrown in the works somewhere and they don't go through.
So , I give Guy Lilburne 5 STARS on The Flower Girl and a BIGGER 5 STARS for Cocktails and Dreams.

Epic Story!

I read 1 or 2 books per week. I downloaded "The Flower Girl" after reading Mr Lilburne's The Thai Dragon and The Kiss of the Dragon. I started to read this last night about 10 pm and did not stop until it was finished in the early hours. This afternoon, I started to read it all over again.....still cannot put it down. I have never done that before. All 3 books are outstanding.

"The Flower Girl" had an old ex Navy Fighter Pilot laughing myself silly in some parts and bawling like a baby in others.

WELL DONE! Mr. Lilburne.....If I ever catch you over in The Land of Smiles, I would be honored to buy you a drink!

A Genuine Improvement. Find a good home for the old edition.

This is the Third Edition (2011) of the HarperCollins Bible Dictionary, developed in cooperation with the Society of Biblical Literature and with a new editor, Lutheran professor of Theology, Mark Allan Powell. The editor has promised several important changes. Since most people who are reading this review may already own a copy of the Second Edition, the question is whether the new edition is worth the $30 bucks. This is especially true since the older version was often considered the best single volume Encyclopedic reference to the Bible.

The first thing I checked was that all biblical quotes are from the NRSV (1989), while the 2nd edition quotes were from the RSV (1946 - 1952). Score points there. Next, all Associate Editors are new, including Amy-Jill Levine. But there are no OT specialists to replace Michael Fishbane. Editor Powell states that there are more references to scripture in the articles. For that and for other matters, I compared the old and new articles on Pontius Pilate, who appears in all four Gospels. The old version was written by Francisco O. Garcia-Treto. The new version retains the original author's credit, with credit to Powell for revising the article. It is plain that Powell kept much of the original text, however the original article was two columns long and the revised version was about three columns long. The first difference I spot is that the new edition cites exact references to Pilate in the works of Philo and Josephus. The older edition simply mentions those references. Most of the additional length is in the section titled "In the Gospel Accounts". In the original version, the author seems more careful than in Powell's revision in summarizing the differences in the way Pilate is treated in the Gospels, but Powell makes up for it by providing lots of detail about the differences between the Synoptics and John. Powell also does not make the mistake of saying that Pilate appears to be a pawn in the hands of the Jews in John. One can interpret Pilate's "business" to be more judicious than the Jews, at the same time respectful of their customs in addition to the rights of the prisoner. (Pilate does show some anxiety near the end, but he gets his pound of flesh from the Jews, when they swear allegiance to Caesar.) Powell's additions certainly have more passage citations than the original.

Dear to my heart is Bibliographies. Here, the new edition is a clear winner. In the article on "Romans", the new edition has four new sources, all of which are considered leading contributions on the letter, including James Dunn's 2 volume commentary (1988), which was oddly excluded from the second edition (1996). The story with the Gospel of John is similar, with seven references (six new references) compared to five references in the second edition. The earlier article was written by Dwight Moody. The later article was rewritten by Powell, adding a table comparing John to the Synoptics (from Powell's NT book). Powell's version, including new table, is longer than Moody's article. So why does John begin on page 533 in the old edition, and on 479 in the new edition?

Comparing the beginning of "A", I found some reasons. First, the entries for the letters, such as "A" are removed. This is not trivial, since "A" and "B" are abbreviations for identifying two major codices of the Greek Bible. I also notice several lesser articles, especially on OT and geography, to be unchanged from the older edition. I also noticed additional cross-reference entries in the new edition, not in the old. However, some cross references in the old, such as "sergeants" was missing from the new. In the newer edition, articles with numbered sections are typeset so it is much easier to see the numbers, as they each begin a new paragraph, and numbers are in bold. At page 15, I found what may be the principle reason for the shrinkage. A three column article on "African Americans and the Bible" was deleted. I have mixed feelings about this. My first thought is that the article was out of place in a reference book about the Bible itself. But when I read the second edition article, I discovered one could say that black contextual theologizing began in the late 18th century, and not in the 1960s, when James Cone wrote his first book. In the end, I suspect that the editors thought the subject had expanded so much in the last 16 years that it outgrew its relevance to straight biblical interpretation. A less controversial deletion would be the long articles (12+ pages) on Sociology in the OT and NT. A fair trade for that deletion would be the expansion of the article on "The Sermon on the Mount" from one column to three pages, a six-fold increase, written by Powell, with a Bibliography, missing from the original.

In the article on "agape" by Powell, I find a major improvement over the earlier anonymous article. Powell states the best modern interpretation of the Greek word as a synonym for "philos" and other Greek words for love. The small article on "agora" shows some of the added biblical citations. Older version had one, the newer version had four. I have not found any evidence of a large number of added maps. However, there are numerous added tables. For example the new edition adds a full page table to the article on "Jerusalem" on the centrality of Jerusalem in Luke-Acts (also from Powell's book, but he did not write the "Jerusalem" article.) The old article on "homosexuality" was edited and enlarged by Powell, ending in a far more balanced view of Paul's references to the subject than was in the original. Some OT articles are a bit shorter, such as the article on "copper". Very small articles, such as one for "cor" lost a line by omitting the pronunciation and replacing words for numbers, such as "60" for "sixty".

The glossy colored illustration sections in the middle and the colored map sections at the end are identical. (Other reviewsers neglected to actually look at the color sections and count pages.)

If the volume is to be used by children, especially if there are few other biblical reference books around, I suggest replacing the old with the new. If you don't have the old, get the new instead of the less expensive older edition. If you have several biblical reference books, the old will probably do fine, until it falls apart from use.

A Disappointing Revision

When I purchased the revised and updated edition of this bible dictionary, I planned for it to be a replacement on my bookshelf for the 1996 revised edition. I am disappointed with this 2011 edition. There are many obvious cost-cutting adjustments to it that detract from its quality when compared with the 1996 edition.

The book's jacket is of inferior quality and does not seem to be as durable as the jacket on the previous edition. The paper used for the body of the book are a little brighter than the 1996 edition, but is made of coarser material.

There are at least nineteen instances in word pronunciations that are erroneous. It looks like an automatic formatting devise was used and the entries were not double-checked. All have to do with the letter "i". The symbol for the pronunciation of the short sound is indicated when there should be the symbol for the long sound (italic). I hope this error will be corrected in future printings of this edition.

I am surprised to see that general editor Mark Allan Powell wrote most of the articles on the books of the New Testament, rather than assign that work to other scholars. The bibliographies might have included some of the other fine introductions to the Bible or to the New Testament such as those written by Raymond Brown; Paul Achtemeier, Joel B. Green, & Marianne Meye Thompson; and Bart Ehrman, all of which were published after 1996.

The absence of many of the excellent articles that were in the 1996 edition troubles me the most. Among the missing articles are those on Archaeology; Biblical Criticism; Historical Geography; Sociology of the Old and New Testament; and Text, Manuscripts, and Versions. Those who can only afford a one-volume bible dictionary or have limited space on their bookshelves will want a volume that will cover these topics.

I will use the 2011 revised and updated edition as a supplement to the 1996 edition. But it cannot be a substitute for the 1996 edition.

I'm an avid reader of the Hebrew Bible and the Christian New Testament, though I spend more time with the Hebrew Bible. Like most people, my memory is not currently capable of remembering the mass amounts of information contained in the Hebrew bible and I have found the HarperCollins Bible Dictionary to be enormously helpful. I do a large amount of scholarly reading on biblical topics and this dictionary is a great way to recall what I have read on certain themes and subjects. The information in this dictionary is on par with current biblical scholarship, and I have absolutely no complaints about that. I use the KIndle edition and I haven't had any problems with it. It's nice to be able to have this kind of trustworthy information on a tablet that I can take anywhere. I can highly recommend this book.

Robert Clive (1725–1774), later 1st Baron Clive, is widely considered the founder of British India. He arrived in Madras as a clerk for the East India Company in 1744. Clive is a fascinating and important historical figure: a lowly company employee who rose to great heights; an informally trained military commander who led company and local Indian troops to a series of stirring victories over local rivals who were supported by the French; a grasping politician who used his great wealth to secure a prominent social position; and, finally, a hounded society notable who, plagued by illness, allegedly took his own life.

No one in the early days of the British ventures in India was as well known or as controversial as Clive became. In our own day, when empire and globalism are witnessed and talked about with ease, Clive’s position as both a servant of the East India Company—which developed into the world’s largest transnational trading company at the time—and an agent of imperialism makes him a surprisingly resonant figure.

Specialists should consider it, Practitioners should look elsewhere

I will recommend this to one or two colleagues, but it will not be something I will recommend to clients.

The first thing you notice about this book is its very academic style. It has numbered paragraphs like 2.0, and 7.3.1.12. It been used a graduate text, presumably for mathematicians and computer scientists. I think it would be good for that purpose. It could work quite well for statisticians that are interested in the details of data mining algorithms. It is in a series in Machine Perception and Artificial Intelligence. Other titles include "Fundamentals of Robotics", and "Bridging the Gap Between Graph Edit Distance and Kernel Machines", so don't confuse this book with something like Data Mining Techniques, which is written for a general audience. It opens the 2nd chapter with (condensed): "A training set is a bag instance of a bag schema. A bag instance is a collection of tuples that may contain duplicates." The folks that I work with can instantly divide themselves into those that would consider a book like this, and those that wouldn't. It cites references in almost every sentence, which can be distracting to the casual reader, and eventually convinced me that I need to read the original authors like Breiman. Classification and Regression Trees

So having issued a warning, there is plenty to like. The authors have made a real attempt to cover everything - I found 1/3 that I knew, 1/3 that will be quite useful to me, and 1/3 that is too much detail for me. Chapter 3 "Evaluation of Classification Trees" will be great for statisticians that wondered how to judge the efficacy of a tree that was built without hypothesis testing. Also, I was very pleased to see a chapter on "Decision Forests", which is a discussion of "ensemble methods" - in other words combining a set of tree models.

I was hoping for something that would have a detailed chapter on each of the most common decision trees algorithms with briefer sections on the obscure ones. It has all this information, but in a way that I have to work pretty hard to get to it. If you want a quick overview of data mining (even if you think that trees are the method you are going to use), try Data Mining Techniques. Data Mining Techniques: For Marketing, Sales, and Customer Relationship Management If you want to know the details, but are content to learn the details only on the well known techniques (like CHAID and CART) then Larose is a good choice. Survey of the literature, not a standalone work

The important thing to know about this book before purchasing is that it does not, on the whole, stand on its own. It covers a great number of topics relating to decision trees and their use, but the coverage is primarily as a survey of the literature rather than as usage examples or algorithmic details. Most of the book takes a very qualitative look at the topics; there are few if any quantitative results to be found within.

If you're looking for a collection of organized references to important papers on the topic of decision trees and you've access to the archives of the cited journals, then this book is useful as a jumping-off point to see how the various papers relate. If you're looking for a standalone book on the topic, look elsewhere.

About the Author
Martin Windrow is series editor at Osprey and an authority on the post-war French army, particularly the Foreign Legion. He is the author of the very successful Men-at-Arms 300: French Foreign Legion since 1945, and Men-at-Arms 322: The French War Indochina War 1946-54, and the critically acclaimed The Last Valley: Dien Bien Phu and the French Defeat in Vietnam (2004). Gerry Embleton has been a leading illustrator and researcher of historical costume since the 1970s, and has illustrated and written Osprey titles on a wide range of subjects for more than 20 years. He is an internationally respected authority on 15th and 18th century costumes in particular. He lives in Switzerland, where since 1988 he has also become well known for designing and creating life-size historical figures for museums.

Great Summary on Foreign Legion Since 1945

Martin Windrow hits another home run with this book. The Osprey format limits how in-depth an author can go on a topic but Windrow gives an excellent overview of the history of Le Legion since '45. It is enough to satisfy the neophyte. For the everyday military historian, it answers most of your questions; and probably will entice you into digging deeper into the history of the Legion.

Martin Windrow and the FFL how can you go wrong. I'll bet any one who has painted a FFL army used his books as a guide to painting FFL figures. I did. What more can I say.

Osprey does it again

Another book covering an elite organization is condensed into a small publication. Great colored prints and troop organization. I only wished it covered more recent conflicts in Africa
